Sony KDL32W4000
okay, you'll have to excuse what is likely to be a stupid question, but i have been used to a CRT TV...
As recommended by the shop we have just purchased a Sony Bravia KDL32W4000 and most of the time viewing normal Sky via a SCART input. Blacks are VERY black, browns are black... blacks are very dominant. I have tried various settings in the picture menu but can't seem to make a differnence so that all pictures are great all of the time. Colours aren't quite right, the refresh rate sometimes can be very poor (ghosting, jerky), as well as overall poor images compared with a CRT (very bright whites, face colours wrong). I knew what the pitfalls of LCD were before purchasing but was hoping for a better result out of a Bravia. Please someone tell me there's one setting I've got wrong...! That said, some programs from time to time can be excellant, but the majority aren't. I dont think there's anything necessarily wrong with the TV. |

Is the picture mode set to 'Vivid'? If it is, set it to 'Standard' and then fiddle with the picture settings.

When adjusting the picture settings I would recommend keeping the contrast and brightness relatively high but slightly reducing the intensity of the backlight, which should allow you to bring out the contrast in the darker areas without the overly bright whites.
I think the ghosting is caused when the upscaling struggles with a poor source rather than actually being a problem with the refresh rate; using the built-in Freeview tuner the main channels usually look great but it sometimes struggles with those that use particularly low bitrates. I don't have a reference point for the Sky picture quality but a cheap DVD player connected via SCART gives surprisingly good results, so it's probably not an issue intrinsic to SCART inputs. |

Make absolutely sure you are viewing via RGB, switch the option between RGB and PAL a few times on the Sky box, the difference should be instantly obvious between the two. If you don't see an obvious change, then you're only watching in PAL.

Thanks very much to all answers, have set to RGB, have adjusted the settings to those suggested by player1. I think its definately an improvement, unfortunately where we are we cant get Freeview, if we could we would be telling Mr Sky to take a hike.
I was wondering if I'd be receiving relies such as 'you dont want to but that TV...' |

I've got this TV and so have many others!.... over at the AVforums you'll find many people rate this TV as one of the current best 32" LCD's around. I'm sure someone will tell you Panasonic or Samsung is better but each to their own!
I spent months looking, comparing and finally going for this model..... I had a most excellent Sony CRT and really wanted something that would look good on standard definition as well as HD and I'm more than happy. In fact I'm more happy than I thought I would be as I used to sell TV's and am a really fussy sod when it comes to picture quality! Personally I found those HDTV settings a bit rubbish.....but I hate to use colour temp settings that make things look yellowy... but it's a personal taste I'm sure. Now you know you've got 3 preset picture modes, cinema, standard and vidid? - use the standard mode as your preffered option and now go in and adjust it, my preferred settings are along the lines of: Backlight 4, contrast 55, brightness 55, colour 53, Colour Temp Neutral, sharpness 1, noise reduction OFF, MPEG reduction OFF, Advanced Settings OFF Now I find the above gives very good evening viewing.... note that the cinema and vivid modes allow you to set them seperately so you can set cinema to dark/constrasty or vivid to bright and colourul so you can have a daytime setting that's easy to flick to (vivid) and then in the evening go to Standard or cinema. Note that vivid allows less adjustment and tends to be too harsh unless you're watching gloomy Eastenders or Corination Street! Now you may not realise that this TV needs the sound and picture settings to be set per input type, so if viewing Sky via RGB scart then set the picture and sound when viewing this input... if you then go to another input like HDMI, freeview or analogue then you need to adjust picture and sound settings individually for each input... this might seem a pain but means that you've got great control over various sources. Some suggest having more contrast and backlight and it is a personal thing... but I've found the settings above work really well for all my inputs (Sky, SkyHD, DVD and blu ray) Hope that helps. |

I don't mind it , I'm a bit of a Sony nut right now with a Sony TV, Home Cinema and PS3. The Bravia menu is a close match to the PS3 menu which I like
