OK i;m cooking for the gf and she loves salad. I've never been a fan of cold food so don't really like salads.

I'm cooking some fish and wanted to do a warm salad to go with it as then I will enjoy it a bit more and she likes salad too.

I was going to do a bit of rocket and maybe add in a few more bits of veg I like, maybe some spinach. Now I know you can warm rocket up and stuff as i've had this before in restaurants but i'm not too sure how to do this as I don't want to burn it or anything. Can I just heat it through for a few minutes in a frying pan with some olive oil or no I need to do anything different, don't want to burn or ruin anything

Hey

I made a warm rocket salad just last week and it was delicious! Didn't have to warm the actual rocket though in order for the dish to be 'warm'.

I made some red onion 'wedges', then fried them off with some pancetta and pine nuts (you can add some sprigs of thyme too). You then throw all that in a bowl with a few handfuls of rocket, slosh in some more olive il if you want and a couple of glugs of balsamic vinegar.

Then put it straight on the plate with some parmesan on top if you have some, it's fine without though. Got this one from Jamie oliver and it's so yummy

thanks for the advice but my problem is that this will sort of be a side salad so I wanted to warm it through a bit first. I'm a bit fussy and not a fan of cold food so if i put it on the side of my place as is with the fish the other side then i don't think I will like it very much

I've heard of a Warm Salad as a Main Course (Sliced Duck Breast and Bacon f'rinstance) but not as a side dish. Suppose you could omit the Duck and just do the Bacon (or Pancetta) and do an Olive oil/Balsamic dressing which has been gently warmed poured over it. Hope that helps.

erm it would be warm though, if you can co ordinate it so that it can be mixed at the same time as you serve the fish, the pancetta/onion etc are very hot, and so make the the whole thing warm

anyway, enjoy what you have either way!

Could you not add the balsamic to the pan, and make a hot dressing? This would make the salad a little hotter wouldn't it? As long as the rocket hasn't come straight from the fridge it shouldn't be "cold" anyway.

that is my basic plan, I will give this a go on Thursday and try that out, hopefully it should be ok.

Don't want to burn any of the rocket or anything so think that will be fine.

I'm probably just over complicating this

Whatver you add to greens of any kind, if it's hot will wilt them a little bit so you won't have a crispy edge to the greens, but they won't be fully cooked either - it's an easy compromise, but I'd add a little honey or something to the warm mixture too if I were you as the flavour compliments balsamic and it will bind it a little bit. Goats cheese goes well with this kind of thing too, again added cold but at the same time as the hot dressing so it melts partially.

well I gave it a go last Friday and it was ok, I just did some olive oil and some balsamic vinegar in a pan but I think I got the mixture a bit wrong but it was a good effort, just need to experiment a bit more I think
