Looks official this time - it's being written by Russell T Davies who is most notorious for penning "Queer as Folk" but is also a diehard DW fan.

What are the forums thoughts?

Excellent news - I've had rekindled interest in Dr. Who since UK Gold started showing the old ones at 6 in the evening.

Sorry to be incredibly anal but I hope Paul McGann can be persuaded to reprise his role as the Doctor, not just for continuity purposes but because although he didn't have much time to make his mark in the 1996 film, 'his' Doctor has been excellent in the radio plays produced in the last few years - go and find the webcast of 'Shada' if you don't believe me!

I'm very much a fan of McGann myself and hope at least an official TV regeneration as in the TV movie can take place (not one like 6-7). Also gladdened that the lead actor names being put forward seem sensible for once.

The Telegraph says it will initially be a one-off six parter.

This is the best news that Doctor Who fans could have possibly hoped for.

I hope McGann gets the opportunity to recreate the roll he did so well with in the movie.

the only thing i'm surprised about is why they did
n't coose an established Who story writer to write the story?

Actors I'd like to see would be

Sean Pertwee - can be quite dark and edgy, links to the Golden Age of Dr Who, handsome
The irish chap off Cold Feet whose name escapes me for the moment - good balanace of light and shade

Actors I'd not want include
Richard E Grant (although I do rate him - well his writing anyway LOL)
Any "comic" actor - done that and it didnt work

Before he became Russell "Queer as Folk" Davies he wrote two very well received children's dramas for the BBC ("Century Falls" and "Dark Season"), which I think included the TV debuts of Kate Winslet and Paul Nicholls. He also wrote one of Virgin's DW New Adventures novels - "Damaged Goods" I think. Had the series continued unabated he would surely be on the writing roster anyway.

Many of the established writers like Robert Holmes have passed on.

According to the Media Guardian he's already done it (alond with Peter Davidson (sic))

I agree that McGann (can't remember which one) was good and I liked Eric Roberts as the Master, but I never really got the movie Perhaps it was the big budget Americanisation of the whole attempt

I just hope that the beeb or whoever is going to make it do not make a complete and horlicks of the show and kill it for good.

BRING BACK THE DALEKS!!!!

This is good news for the Dr Who fans, I hope it comes off.

I wonder who much tinkering they will do with the format? I dont think this will necasarily be a bad thing, and I do hope that the fans that fought hard for its return will be able to accept some of the changes (if there are any). For instance in the TV movie (a failed pilot) the Dr was made more human (in fact it was recealed he was half human and half Klingon (spot the lie).

What will be the taget audiance?
Will it be a 9.00pm "spooks" sort of thing, or a Saturday evening "family" drama?

They MUST keep
1) the tardis
2)the music

It will be a big mistake to wipe out the dr who "history", although they may have to take some liberties with the "canon" principle.

I think Lorraine H (who we really must thank for her 2 years lobbying) has always wanted it back on Saturday teatimes on BBC1.

Ironically I think RTD will be a traditionalist and tinker very little.

Given the absolutley DISMALL tv ratings for saturday evening telly at the moment, it would appear to be a natural home for it.

I'm reluctant to give priase to LH because of an interview she once gave to the BBC magazine, where she came across as a right bitch. But I know that a lot of DR Who fans are holding her responsable for the shows return so maybe she does deserve my thanks.

What ever level of changes are made, I do hope that the "old" fans can bite their lip for two series or so (wow Im even talking about the third series). I think it will take time for something like this (effectively a new show) to settle down, and British sc-fi series havent got a good track record for longevity.

Were going to start talking about who (!) should play the next Dr Who, next. I'm all excited!!

As long at it Keeps Noel Edmonds, or another programme designed to pack out a five minute lottery draw off the screens I'm up for it.

Gay Daleks are however a worrying prospect.

and whats wrong with gay Daleks??? They have just as much right to conquer the universe as the straght ones!

Its such a sad reflection on society that a gay dalek would need to hide "its" sexuality in order to gain the acceptance of someone they are trying to EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE.

( yes I do know the gay ones say something different )

At least when you go on about Kate Lawler being a Hollywood bound A-lister it's funny.

I've alerted the moderators.

I'm glad at hearing this, though, with a new series, there's a few things they must do:

Do not reduce the chessiness level by too much
Do not up the budget by too much
And whatever you do, do NOT add the filmic effect to the picture

The above 3 are all part of the show's charm, and while it cannot be too cheesy or low budget for today's audience, it still has to be to a certian extent

You are joking right?

I beleive the gay daleks things was taken of a series of sketches shown on a tv show. I though we were making refernce to that.

And yes they did say "that".
Hope this isn't my last post!

I don't think the majority of the public or hardcore fandom would be happy it the prog being back as a postmodern ironic camp confection. The last people who thought that would be a good idea were behind the last incarnation of "Crossroads" ie the one that lasted 4 and a half months.

It will be brilliant to see Dr Who again!!!
I do hope that htey are able to get McGann back as he was brill and would make a good series Dr!!
I cant see that they could get away with changing hte theme too much although i did actually like the film version dont know why but i thougt it was rather good!!!
I do remeber hearing Sean Pertwee (maybe in a Dog Soldier interview) saw that he wouldnt like to be the Dr as it was his dads thing and that he himself wouldnt be suited to the part!!!
