Problems with a PVR80
klatu
10-09-2008
After a year of perfect and enjoyable use of our Digihome PVR80, problems have started. [just outside the warranty]

Viewing is breaking up, particularly the sound and recordings also. The customer support line offered a procedure for what I think is resetting defaults, by holding down the startup button on the front of the unit for 15 seconds and then allowing for disk check. This works for a limited period but then goes back to breaking up. Disk check is always OK and I have come to the conclusion that the problem is with the digital box and not the hard drive. Any ideas that might help resolve this would be very much appreciated.

What does the signal strength meter read?

At the risk of showing my technical ignorance, Is there a signal strength meter? and where is it? A quick review of the documentation from the recorder doesn't mention anything like a SSM?

I'm located in NW London which would suggest a good single strength. Have checked antenna and connections.

Check the Manual scan screen, something like Menu/Setup/Installation, and you will see a white bar representing 0-100% strength, plus a verbal description of the quality.

They represent the channel you're currently viewing. The channel number shown is the broadcast channel, not the programme channel, so you can ignore that unless you know what a mux is and what channels they are broadcast on.

It's a long shot because you seem to be having problems with 'live' viewing/listening, but my PVR160 protests when the hard drive is, say, seven-eighths full and recovers when I delete some recordings.

As my hard drive is less than half full, this MSS looks interesting. But it is asking for 'channel' numbers between 21 and 68.

How do I relate these numbers to real station channels?

The channel numbers you need in the tuning screen are the UHF Channel numbers representing UHF frequencies which have been in use since the early days of TV broadcasting. They are entirely different from the channel numbers allocated to individual Freeview broadcasters in the Channel List and EPG of a PVR e.g. BBC1=Channel 1, ITV1=Channel 2 etc.

To find the UHF Channel numbers for the 6 MUX's used to carry Freeview signals from your local transmitter you need to look at a reference such as the one here. Select your Region from the list on the RH side of that page, then look at the top table and read of the Channel numbers for your tramsmitter. Put these numbers into your manual search one after the other.

I too have problems with my PVR80. Mine usually starts playing up about the same time each day (around 4.30-5.00 pm); some times its so bad that the picture will freeze completely and the only way to remedy it is to switch it off at the wall socket, wait for 60 seconds and then switch it back on again.

Another thing that happens is that if I'm recording something then I get the picture break-up/"stuttering sound" on some of the channels (the ones with the weaker signals). However, if I pull the unit holding the TV, recorder etc away from the wall by a couple of feet it stops doing it.

Do you have a gas boiler or similar, arranged to start up at about that time? These are notorious for interfering with recepton as the sparker ignites. Or maybe you're near a main road at rush hour, for a more prolonged effect from car ignitions.

Digital UK are rolling out a new encoding within the digital stream - they have changed from '2K' to '8K' standard.

Where are you based? The Selkirk East Borders transmitter and all relays were converted to 8K over the first half of November.

There was a temporary (2 days) OAD available on MUX B I think, which fixed the issue whilst only MUX1 had been upgraded.
As you have now lost ALL channels, and OAD (over air update) will not be possible.

If you contact Digital UK (08456 505050) their engineers might be able to offer more advice.
