Hello all,

I have just come back from holiday in Spain and it got me thinking about all the yummy food I was looking forward to once I got there- stuff that you can't find (authentically, anyway) in the UK.

Stuff like:

- real Gazpacho Andaluz (cold tomato soup)
- Menorcan cheese, which I had never tried before. Yummy.
- Granizado de Limon - a tangy lemon 'slushie' drink.
- REAL ali-oli (garlic mayo) - not the stuff you get in jars in Tesco.

So my question is: what international foods do you adore when you're visiting a particular country? Things you can't find here, and you seriously crave between visits?

Looking forward to hearing some interesting replies!

Welcome to DS Baggins

I holiday a lot in France too and always stock up on Chipsters (salted potato snacks), real Orangina (doesn't taste the same in the UK) and Lu biscuits. Also, real French pistachio ice-cream. Nowhere else does glace de pistaches like the French.

Bon appetit.

Greek cheese pies. Filo pastry folded over and filled with a mix of feta and graziano (i think) cheese, and fried (again, I think). They're excellent little things and I had them every night over there, and have since been looking for somewhere over here to buy them.

Toll House chocolate chips. The only way to make chocolate chip cookies and I have only ever found one shop outside of London that imports them. And zabaglione ice cream - once tasted, never forgotten. A little piece of Italian heaven.

When I was in Singapore I loved the Seaweed you could get for about 10p a strip in newsagents.

Not a delicacy but lovely. I wish I could nip down to the garage for a bit of Seaweed

(I nearly bought some in Sainsbury the other day on 3 for 2, but they are pricey anyhow, and I didn't want that much of it)

Beat me to it! We had a bakery near our apartments that did them and I had them nearly every day for lunch.

I'm off to New England and Cape Cod in a few weeks, so I'm looking forward to chowder. I went to Boston a few years ago and wasn't keen on the sound of it, I thought it would be horrid. But it was really gorgeous. I haven't had it since, and I'm really looking forward to more.

God I love Greece.

Also, proper falafel is gorgeous. There was this lovely lemon drink I had in Cairo which was absolutely gorgeous but I can't remember what it was called

Cherry Ripes, Nutri-grain, Violet Crumbles and Summer Rolls. Good Greek food, I know you can get it in the UK but I do live in Kidderminster, Vietnamese rice paper rolls and a proper Aussie BBQ in 30 degree heat.

The flavoured Quaker oat porridge you get in the States. Peach, banana and strawberry are good. I guess I can have a go with our humble oats

Waffles you do in the toaster, rather than make from scratch. French Toast. They do a lot of ready to heat breakfast foods.

30 degrees? That's all? You seemed tougher than that.
