can they put a trellis type screen outside the window too small for the cat to climb through, and they could grow things up it.

Put pots on the windowsill outside so it cant jump up. Or holly branches. That worked in my veggy patch, when the neighbours cats pooed between my lettuces. I burried holly leaves just between the plants, and when the cat gets prickled it wont go back in a hurry.

if they can trap it in the kitchen, and get a bucket of water and throw some at it, then it will scamper out very fast indeed when they release it, then put the bucket on show for a time... poor cat will remember when it sees the bucket, and not want a repeat performance.

It is cheap, makes a statement to the cat, and does no real harm, and is readily available.

Well for one the collar thing is rubbish. Dogs have to wear collars for identification but cats don't. As cats climb, it is very dangerous for them to wear a collar. We once had a cat who was very nearly strangled due to getting his collar caught on a branch, it's lucky someone was home and heard him miaowing and helped him get free.

My friend had a similar problem with a neighbouring cat coming in and eating her cat's food.

She put a bowl of cat food laced with very hot chillis (chopped up very fine). The cat raced in, scoffed the food down without letting it touch the sides, and then raced out screeching when it tasted the chilli (too late). it never came back.

My neighbour's cat is currently fast asleep on the back of my sofa- he goes home to eat but seems to prefer life here when we are in!

We have a neighbour who actively encourages the road's cats to enter her home. She basically steals people's cats...gives them food and stuff. I hate it...it's totally wrong. Luckily our cats are frightened of everyone apart from us so they hate her too.

I LOVE the fact you want to discourage the cat from entering your house...and its owners will too!
