We have changed the SCART lead between our Sony DAV-DZ231 and KDL32W4000 TV to a HDMI lead; so far so good as DVDs work fine.

But... the Sky is on a SCART to AV1 but we're not getting any sound out of the home theatre system (as we did when it was all SCARTs). Is the HDMI just one -way? Do I therefore also need to fit the cable shown as 'Digital audio out' with an optical audio cable, or have we not got something set up correctly in the TV/home theatre settings?

Also, when a DVD plays, '576p' displays in the top left-hand corner of the TV, is this the standard for normal DVDs?#

thanks

You are correct about having to fit the extra optical lead. The HDMI socket on your tv is input only, unlike your sky socket which was capable of audio out.

576P just means thats what the tv is receiving from the DVD player. Your TV is then upscaling it to fit your display. There's probably a setting in your DZ231 to allow it to perform the upscaling, in which case your tv would show 1080i or 1080p, whatever you chose. Be warned however you may not necessary get a better picture just because you do the upscaling elsewhere! Try it and see.

With my equipment I can see little or no difference between my dvd upscaling or leaving the tv to do it. But some people report different experiences.

Depends on which model Sky box you have, if it's the basic box it won't have an optical output, you will have to connect it via phonos providing the sound system provides this connection for external equipment.

If it is Sky+ or Sky HD you're laughing as both boxes have optical outputs for 5.1 when available.

Found the setting on the DVD player so now its set to 1082i.

It's just a standard sky box so no optical output, just two phonos for left and right channels. The home theatre doesnt have phonos at all, so best to connect the optical cable between TV and home theatre? I have reconnected the SCART cable and now getting audio back from the Sky (DVD is on the HDMI connection as selecting the HDMI input for playing DVDs is working very well).

Is this the best/correct way for connections given the equipment we have?

Did it affect the picture at all then? As I said your tv will upscale anyway so you may find it is no better than leaving it at 576P.

I think the picture looks better, yes.

My unresloved issue is still how to set up the sound connections when using HDMI though, whether to use SCART, optical, phonos, etc.

You say there's an optical out on the TV. Try using that instead of the scart. You should then get whatever the TV is showing coming thru the speakers.

So its not a night and day difference between the 576P setting and 1080i setting then? Sorry to go on about this, but I am really interested in the upscaling abilities of external devices to the internal upscaling of displays. Basically I don't think there's much difference, but other people do.

Ah... there is an optical out on the TV but nothing on the bcak of the DVD player so that rules out that connection. There's only a SCART.

I have to admit that I dont understand the principles of upscaling and what each bit equipment does and doesn't do, but I guess there is a bit of improvement from 576p to 1080i.

The only option I can see that may work is to use the stereo mini jack connection on the front of the system.
