Jacket Potatoes
Went to Tesco yesterday and bought some large "baking potatoes"
Put one in the oven for about an hour and a half. I expected ito come out nice and fluffy and floury on the inside but it was really wet and watery ![]() This is not how jacket potatoes are supposed to be, is it ?? Where did I go wrong ? |

Was it cooked through?
Maybe it's the variety of potato. We got some general potatoes from the supermarket for chips and they came out soggy and limp everytime. Maris Piper and King Edwards give a much better result. A tip for your baking potatoes would be to pierce them to let the heat in and the steam out or even skewer them to get a permenant heat source throughout. |

I have just had a baked potato & it was awful. My hubby brought them back from Tesco. I they seem to be like that from there just lately, I will have to nip to the market & get some & see how they are. It could be something to do with all this rain we have had.

Did you boil your jacket first (for about 1/2 hr)? This helps. Then oil a baking tray (olive is best) and salt the potato, put into a very hot oven and turn over 1/2 way through cooking.
Works every time!

I think I will stick to Maris Pipers in future - I know they are always nice and fluffy inside. And, Ruthykins, would boiling them first not stop the skins going nice and hard ? - the nice crispy skin is almost the best bit

You don't need to pierce them, probably the type of Potato you bought

I agree, when I cooked mine I was appalled by the lack of a Rutger Hauer voice-over. Zap them in the microwave next time.

Tesco's potatoes (amongst other things) have been really crap lately - just one of the reasons that we have changed our shopping loyalty to Sainsburys.

![]() If you get a good Maris Piper, I bake mine till soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. I then take them out the oven, split them in two halves and scoop the pulp out. I mix the pulp with a stock cube dissolved in half a cup of boiling water, a couple of teaspoons of lazy garlic, pepper, low fat sour cream and teaspoon of dijon mustard. Mix well and spoon back into the jackets. Top with some of your favourite grated cheese and a sprinkle of paprika. Bake for another 15 mins. Delish ![]() I also sometimes steam cauliflower/broccoli and mash this into the mix as well. Very good for getting peeps who don't eat veg eating it without knowing
