Is cooking an 'art'?
A lot of people seem to take cooking very seriously, some even going as far as making assumptions on your social background based on what you eat and how you eat it.
I eat to live, not the other way around. Don't get me wrong, I do like to cook but it seems more of a chore than a hobby. |

I suppose some may consider it an art since they have things such as food critics who would give a bad review if someone forgot to put a piece of parsley on top of soup because the presentation wasn't good!

I guess it is an art, although im not bothered how it looks, more so how it tastes. I dont like cooking more than 3 things at once. I dont see it as a chore, but its not a hobby either, just a necessity.

The presentation can be an art form. You eat with your eyes. Also think of the amount of time and effort that goes into advertising. Getting that food to look right even though it's only aTurkey Twisler.
The production can be very scientific. A good example of both would be cakes. The ingredients have to be exact to get the right product and then the decoration is used to make it look appealing. |

If it is an art, there are several really sh*t offerings I have encountered in restaurants over the years, that do deserve a place in Tate Modern

I wouldn't call it an Art, its just cooking.
Of course, if you enjoy cooking, you make make it a hobby, and sometimes you may want to produce something as close to perfect as you can. |

I think with preponderance of PROGRAMS on the subject, it is RIGHT to describe it as Cookery PORN! People watch it but noone "ordinary" actually participates - or recreates the recipes etc.

It could be argued that anything which is creative is an art form. I certainly consider cookery to be an art if it's done well...

its not an art form.. its food, its all about the taste not the presentation! most chefs are men, so they have to make what is essentially a girlie profession, into something supposedly skillfull and arty... lol

IMO, anyone can be a competent cook with practice, but to be really good you have to have the talent for it. E.g. read a recipe and know what it will taste like, much like an artist can visualise his/her painting before they start.
For me the artistry isn't in the presentation, but how good it tastes, and some people are simply better at it than others ! |

I think it can be very creative.
The presentation and flavour combine many creative and artistic talents. Mainly though, for me its about the taste and flavours - if it looks really good too that's a bonus! |

Through cooking one can be creative. A simple sponge cake can turn into something beautiful like how a painter turns a blank canvas into a work of art. So yeah I'd say it is an 'art'.

Everyone I know who cooks well has some kind of "artistic" talent.... I can't even draw stick figures and whilst I cook OK I am not fantastic
