Well according to Mrs B the old TV at home has gone to TV heaven so we need to look at a new TV.

I've been thinking about it over the last couple of years. thr oom is probably big enough to take a 37" or 40" (using the rule of dividing distance from the screen by 3)

From some initial investigations a while ago (an probably false but there you gop) I was told that this was about break point size was. Above that go for Plasma , below LCD.

Anyone got any suggestions or good deals on a mid-level kind of budget ?

You could argue all day with people on here about plasma or lcd once you get to 40" territory, LCD's have done some catching up to plasma but arent quite there for all round use, SD for example looks alot better on a plasma in my eyes. I have a 42" panasonic plasma (TH-42PZ81) which cost me just over a grand and is perfect for the things I use it for: Built in freeview/freesat, PS3(games, bluray, music, dvd), Wii and on occasion xbox360 and ps2. One thing that plasmas have over lcd's that is big for me is how deep the blacks are...the sony X series is near "plasma blackness" but they cost alot more than £1000

Cheers for the comments. I've been doing a bit of research over lunch and I think I've got to remember that although this will be the main TV - it's still only a SD source I'll be using.

Think it could be time to grab a bargain as I won't be using 1080p for a couple of yerars unttil Sky get rid if the extra monthly charge. At which point this TV can be moved to one of the other rooms.

The panasonic 42px80 has been very reasonable lately, so much so lots of places seem to be short of stock, now about £620
I have one, I only use SD ( it 'only' a HD ready set) , frankly I'm amazed at the PQ you actually get compared to what you see in stores etc (watching from between 9 ~ 15ft)
they also do a 37px80

I have a 37" Panasonic PX80 (Plasma).

The picture is excellent even on SD channels and I am very pleased with it.

You can now pick these up for about £600

I have this http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/617729/index.html and have to say that I am very pleased with the PQ of both (upscaled) SD and HD.

Cost me £938.

If you decide on that TV which is LCD not Plasma then get it from John Lewis and price match it with Sound and Vision who sell the same set for £825.

By buying from JL not only will you get the cheaper price but also a 5yr warranty included.

Just to add, I've just ordered one via Littlewoods Direct. Using voucher XX869 to take 10% off, and there's 8% cashback via quidco. If the cashback comes through it should have only cost around £480 After some research I reckoned it was as good a TV as any, as the last 37" plasma on the market Hope the code still works, it did on Friday.

Went into Comet tonight, they had the very TV hooked up to a SkyHD box with an HDMI lead showing...Music Choice

The Panasonics get great reviews and I can`t recommend John Lewis enough as you get good service, a 5yr warranty and if you do your home work will get the TV at a competitive price by shopping around and setting up a price match.

Panasonic have just announced a new top of the range 37 in ( LZD81 ) with built in freesat , in the shops any day now !

Think of it as a PZ81 with a small screen and you have got it !

If possible perhaps even price match it from Digitech Electronics, as they have it for even less; only £736
