Asda food quality
Has it been going down recently?
I've noticed it as being bad before, I'm thinking they are cutting costs. I bought some chinese veggie spring rolls, had some horrid gloop in them. Bought some prawns, they went off after a day, that horrible fishy smell, I'm quite fussy over seafood. Treated myself to those chicken fajita thingies, chicken was tasteless, onions were almost raw, and the quality of the salsa left a lot to be desired. Gloopy, fishy, tasteless food. I expect more for the prices I pay, although I bet M&S are a lot more expensive. I don't know if they can be blamed for fruit, as the oranges I bought were tasteless and crunchy, is that Asda's fault or is it just not the season for oranges? At least their smartprice toilet roll is less harsh than what it used to be. |

I have to agree with you dmuk, the things I've found going off really quickly - cherry tomatoes - opened them the day after I bought them, and the ones in the bottom of the pack were covered in mouldy fur
- didn't buy oranges - cos they were rock hard and still green - was in Asda on Friday - and I noticed their pre-packed cheddar was still well with in the sell-by date, but was mouldy inside the packaging

I don't think this is just an Asda issue.
Have had food troubles with the bread and cheeses I brought from Tesco on Saturday... still well within date but mould on the bread and the cheese!!! The peaches were very sour tasting and I brought their vege burgers and found them to have a very gritty texture - it did say 'new and improved' on the box though! |

Also, their cherry tomatoes are the size of golf balls.

I posted some time ago about the poor quality at my local (and only) supermarket, Scottish Co-op. I'm on a Scottish island, which I thought was the reason, but the posts above suggest otherwise.
It sounds as if it's all about maintaining profit margins |

For fruit and Veg I think that Sainsburys and Morrisons are the best of the big supermarkets.
I would never buy Fruit and Veg from Asda....well maybe not never but you know. |

They're in a price war so it wouldn't surprise me if they're skimping on quality.
I don't think waitrose and m&s are anything special, have had bad stuff from both though they tend to be a bit better than most. I find the local street market is usually a day or two fresher and a lot cheaper although there's a few bad 'uns from there as well sometimes. |

I can only compare between Tesco and Asda, and I would say that Asda's own brand stuff in particular is of lower quality.

Two out of the three items you are describing could hardly be described as 'food' in the first place. |

We never really buy any pre-made food. Will buy the fresh / frozen ingredients and work from there. |

Have always found Asda's veg, fruit and meat pretty poor quality and, even more importantly, tasteless.
Morrison's fruit/veg is ok by supermarket standards but I prefer buying at local fruit & veg shop if i can...they're just never open when I come home from work!

Our butcher even does what we call oven food. They do marinated meat for you too, so you can just stick it in the oven on a lazy night. |

Just like majority you posting in this thread I buy all my meat and vegetables fresh from local market and butchers as well as chickens and eggs. I used to shop at ASDA and Tesco but quality was always poor (especially ASDA). ASDA meat hardly ever lasts more than a day and you never know where it came from.
I asked farmers at my local market if I can come and have a look at their farms and everyone was more than welcoming - which turned out to be a great day out. Now I know where my meat comes from and I am happy to eat it - fresh and much cheaper. Pav http://www.imageworksltd.com |

They're part of Walmart now - so a piece of fruit will cost £10 while you can get a dozen cakes for 50p.
They won't stop until we're all fat diabetics. |

I usually get my big shop delivered from Waitrose or Tesco but decided to give Asda a go last week and I was quite surprised not only at the difference in price but also at the quality of the items. I dont buy ready meals so everything was either fresh meat/fish/fruit and veg plus store cupboard items and alcohol. The receipt told me I saved £36 on their normal prices. The meat was all good quality (the steak in particular was superb) as was the fruit and veg. Plus everything was in stock, no substitutions and it was delivered ten minutes into the two hour slot. I'll use them again.

I think some people struggle to identify what is a good piece of meat and just grab anything, no wonder they will moan. Their ready meals aren't too bad either, I certainly don't think I'm above eating a ready meal now and again, the same goes for..... shock horror!.... fast food.

Some supermarket fish counter fish and seafood is alright, but it's never anything like the quality you get from a fishmonger. |

Nobody who is fussy about seafood ever buys it from a supermarket, unless their supermarket happens to be Fortnum and Masons.
