I bought some scotch pancake type things from Sainsburys last weekend and they were mouldy by the morning although still (supposedly) in date, so i don't think it's just Asda by any means!

Unfortunately I have to agree. Asda was where I did my main shop as it's literally less than a minute's drive up a straight road but my loyalty started to wane when I bought chicken breasts and opened them the next day to an awful foul (not fowl ) smell. Shame I had thrown the receipt away.
Their milk always went off within about three days and at times within the best before date. I thought it was something to do with my fridge but when I buy the milk from the supermarket I go to now, it goes for the whole week beyond the best before date.
There were other food stuffs where the look and quality was just off putting and the delivery service was equally dire.

For some unknown reason the milk in my local asda is always dripping wet with mouldy milk from other cartons. It's as if the cartons are getting damaged on a weekly basis.

And the fruit is really rank, it's like they freeze it overnight and thaw it out the next day regularly, soft mushy apples

I have no problems with the food in Asda. Ours is always packed at peak times though so I will only go during the day midweek,

I have been shopping at Morrisons recently to take advantage of their summer saving promo and their fruit and veg is shocking. Barely last 2 days after purchase - not even just on the turn but full on mould. Asda and Tesco stuff lasts a good week in my experience.

I'll happily use stuff on the turn as it is often ok when cooked, used in stews etc.

Glad that promo is over so I can go elsewhere again. Not saving as much if you end up chucking stuff out. I can also never get everything I want there so end up going elsewhere to finish my shopping.

I also find Tesco skinless/boneless chicken thighs dodgy. They always look really grey and never look appetising.

Might give Aldi another try. Busy there too at peak times so will have to be a midweek shop. Again, I can never get everything I want there though.

Asda's vegetarian ready meals are very disappointing, but better than Morrissons own-brand equivalents, which are inedible.

I won't by any food stuffs such as meat or fresh ingredients, or anything if I possibly can help it from any supermarket.

Most ready made items can be easily put together at home, and for a fraction of the cost, but double the quality and taste.

Thanks for that, nothing to do with the thread though was it?
Or did you post this just to wind people up and divert the thread?

I prefer Asda fruit and veg to Tesco especially tomatoes and soft fruit. Tescos nectarines and peaches in a punnet were awful this year in my local.

I don't think this year has been a very good year for any summer fruits or salad stuff tbh. I normally buy a lot of my veg in Aldi but because of the poor quality this year I've tried other places and despite paying more I've not seen much improvement apart from the packaging. Last week I paid £2.30 for a small punnet of raspberries in M & S and they were completely tasteless.

Does anyone think Asda's food has gone downhill in the SEVEN years since this thread was started?

Have had food troubles with the bread and cheeses I brought from Tesco on Saturday... still well within date but mould on the bread and the cheese!!!
The peaches were very sour tasting and I brought their vege burgers and found them to have a very gritty texture - it did say 'new and improved' on the box though!”

I bought some pitta bread from Sainsburys yesterday. 24 hours later, they have gone mouldy.

It depends how many people you are cooking for. My sister is constantly buying fresh vegetables for my father and most of them end up being thrown away. I think frozen vegetables are far more cost-effective and nutritious for just one person and sometimes, even ready-meals can work out cheaper than assembling the same meal yourself. The quality of the ready meals does vary enormously though.

I have home delivery from Asda and I've never been disappointed by the quality. I don't very often buy processed food. Mostly straight forward meat and veg. I usually buy their 2 for £7 rump steaks and the same for the lamb steaks and have found them very tasty. Their pork joints are great value with great crackling and moist tasty meat. When I've bought milk it lasts for well over a week, sometimes nearly two. Haven't had anything go mouldy within it's use by date.
I can't comment on fish as I don't like it, but being where I live I would probably get it from the harbour direct.
I suppose, as with any store, you'll get good and bad ones.
