Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright has died aged 65 from cancer.

Wright appeared on the group's first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967 alongside lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason.

Dave Gilmour joined the band at the start of 1968 while Barrett left the group shortly afterwards.

Wright penned songs on classic albums including Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here.

Wright's spokesman said: "The family of Richard Wright, founder member of Pink Floyd, announce with great sadness that Richard died today after a short struggle with cancer.

"The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time."
Ahh - so sad - he was a wonderful musician .

Sad news

I'll be playing a lot of Floyd over the next few days in his memory. Piper, DSOTM, Meddle...so many classic albums that Rick played on. 'Us and Them' is one of my absolute favourite songs of all time.

I'm going to listen to Paint Box later. Classic under-rated RW penned track.

''Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but youre older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought Id something more to say...'' Very sad news . R.I.P. Rick , and thanks for your contribution to some of the music that shaped my life.

Pink Floyd are my musical heroes. I loved the way Rick Wright played the keyboard.

I listen to Pink Floyd every single day and Ricks sound is fantastic.

A sudden shock.

RIP Richard.

Summer 68 is such a good song - and so underrated.

Tragic news. I adore Pink Floyd to bits (every single one of their albums is worth a listen) .

Holy crap, I'm in shock.

I live in dread these days of turning on the news or internet, and finding that one of my heroes, (mostly in their 60s now) has died - and now it's happened.

I never even knew he was ill.

What a terrible day for music.

Condolences to his family, friends and also his fans everywhere.

R.I.P. Rick - you will NEVER be forgotten.

This is awful news. I didn't realise he was ill, but on reflection, he hasn't looked too good when I've seen him recently.

Pink Floyd are in my top three favourite bands, and this is a stinker. So sorry to hear this.
