STB timeouts
Mus1

Annoying.

Happens when I'm actually using the Broadband rather than after hours of not using it.

I still have the HC box - any way of configuring it?

Nobody experienced timeouts, then?

Yes, but my box is the Tiscali+ PVR.

Sometimes my PC is on whilst I'm watching TV (almost always recorded programmes, not live), sometimes not. The box times out quite quickly if it's left in a menu, not so quickly if left on but unused (cos I'm watching something on another PVR for ?? hours). I haven't timed the time-out intervals.

I assume they like to minimise the bandwidth wasted by unused equipment so they put it in standby - that's after struggling to figure out "why?", cos I gotta know these things

boot via internet innitialy not tv if you are still using the old silver hc box should cut out internet timeouts. the tv service will still timeout but shouldn't take the net with it

I usually have the TV off when the box times out. Sometimes it happens when I'm actually using the Broadband sometimes not.

An unrelated issue is the router disconnecting when downloading a file of any size. What's the point of charging for broadband if they don't let you use it.

Great. Sounds like a plan.

How do I reboot via internet? I couldn't see any options when I logged into the Admin control page.

I had that problem with the hc box, used to happen mostly between 9pm & 11pm.I hardly ever used the tv so I changed to the broadband package had no problems since.

No idea if this is related to this, but our box "shuts down" after approx 6 hours of no use. Internet works, but we have to reboot to get TV back. Was told this is perfectly normal as they have to prevent the box over heating.

VERY annoying when you're going away fro a weekend and want to record something though, and you're not interested in the PVR.

I use a timer on the Tiscali box, & a remote control whch has a timer & is programmable to switch on the TV & get past the login screen, because of this TV timeout just to be able to record stuff when I'm away / out !

Hi Mus1

Can you power off the STB for a couple of minutes. Power back up the STB, and instead of turning on the TV service from the remote, re-establish the internet connection. (may need to reboot router, or restart PC) This will cause the STB boot reason to be Internet instead of TV.

Cheers

if you are using the silver homechoice box and not the newer tiscali boxes power off the set top box with the on/off switch on the box and router by pulling the power cable out.

power on the set top box and let it got through it's checks the light flashes red then blue for a bit i think (been a while since i've seen it as am on the tiscali box now), should take about 30 - 60 seconds. once done power up your router and wait fo rit to fully boot up you should notice that the blue light comes on the set top box you are now booted via the internet which shouldn't time out and you can now boot up the tv side of things and now even if that times out the net should stay up and running

@parthena

A philips SBC RU880, - learns keys from other remotes & has programmable timers.
It cost ~£30 , but they don't make them any more.

Any chance that Tiscali will issue a firmware upgrade to the new black STB stop the 6-hour timeout? It's making my recordings impossible.

Except that....

...now I'm back to the router cutting out when it doesn't like a particular site or the size of a download.

Every 10 bl**dy minutes this afternoon I have to go downstairs and unplug it and plug it back in.

Once it has cut out the STB goes back to the usual timeouts.

After 4 years I've never had a satisfactory explanation of why this happens.
