As a new customer to Sky HD you may be able to get a £75+£30 install deal. Depending on how much you have to spend each month on subscription will determine how many HD channels you receive.

More info Here

You also have the choice of Bluray DVD, prices start at around £160 upwards, discs cost from around £10 per movie upwards.

You want high definition.

Only one Sky package (Sky HD) offers you high definition using Sky? Cos all the other packages are not high def.

There's Freesat HD - but there are no Freesat PVRs available at the moment, when they do eventually come out they will cost a hell of a lot more than a Sky HD box will, but they will be free to use once you have bought it. Whereas Sky HD requires a Sky subscription to be able to record it (and a HD subscription if you want to receive all the high definition channels).

Virgin offer high definition via cable (at a cost).

High definition is not available via Freeview.

Freesat also has far fewer HD channels than Sky.

The only one no-one has mentioned yet is downloaded content from the internet.

Downside of that is:

1. They're BIG files.
2. Your PC needs to be connected to the TV and set up properly to play them. Some HD files require A LOT of processing power to play back smoothly.
3. Most of the stuff available for download is not legal.

You can also get media boxes for playing these files (Tvix etc) but standalones are still a bit inconsistent when it comes to playing back HD files.

If you want what I consider plenty of HD content then yes, you should be looking at Sky HD.

They will have close to 30 HD channels by the end of the year, at present they broadcast around 7500hrs of HD.

Virgin Media only have 1 HD channel, the BBC HD channel, this only broadcasts a limited number of hours in a day, when it does it's mostly repeats. VM also have a very small amount of HD via their VOD service, but there has been very little added in the past 2yrs, they also have a few HD movies but you will have to pay upto £4-99 each for them.

I can't see anything changing significantly in the near future either.

If you like sport, Sky HD is a no brainer.

Five HD sports channels (although most of Rush HD's stuff pretty old there is still some good stuff on there and it's not as if it's been broadcast previously on other channels) on Sky HD now.

You can get all the England games if you subscribe to enough channels.

Although, Setanta managed to get hold of the rights to a couple of their away games this year and they don't have an HD channel.

More annoyingly, they also got the rights to ALL Scotlands away games. I finally thought I'd get to watch the entire qualifying campaign in HD and they go and sell some of the rights to Setanta.

Stuff Setanta. I pay enough in licence fees and Sky subscriptions as it is. I'm not paying another £10/£15 a months when just about all I'd watch would be the Scotland away matches. If they had an HD channel as well, I *might* think about it .....
