New satellite dishes on shops
In recent months, I've noticed these new satellite dishes with double poles, (or arms) leading to the LNB, on quite a few shops where I live in Newcastle. They appear to have a brand name written in white across the middle of the dish. The dishes must be about 60cm big, I think, and have a white LNB on the end of them. Are shops, at least where I live, getting some sort of new satellite link up for some purposes? Can anyone shed some light as to why this might be? I can't understand it.

Do these shops promote the National Lottery? If so it is a Bi-directional Satellite broadband connection.
Have a look round in the 'Satellite' forum. |

Oh. Is this a new thing?
The answer to the above question the previous poster asked me is yes, for it is usually on newsagents they are found. but why would you have a broadband connection via a dish instead of underground?

The dish and lnb are manufactured by Hughes http://www.hughes.com/HUGHES/Rooms/DisplayPages/LayoutInitial?pageid=HNS_home&Container=com.webridge.entity.Entity[OID[BF4284F636613D4EA413F6E880737987]]

A standard internet connection could be a target for hackers, an independent encrypted satellite system would be much more secure.
Or it could just be that there's no access to the nework at certain locations, and the satellite connection is their only choice. |

Oh how interesting! Our village corner shop (that has the lottery) got one of these big Hughes dishes quite recently. I wondered why, because it's really ugly!
Hughes is presumably linked to Howard Hughes? I know he was into satellites and helicopters and things. I never knew you could get domestic 2 way satellite broadband. Clever stuff.
