We all know- about 90% of the gaps are good and clean, but E4 insist on cencoring it! I aggree with the swearing being cencored, but most of what is being cencored it pathetic and un-nessercery.

I suspect that most of the "censoring" (even when the "broadcasting restrictions" message is displayed) is actually due to technical difficulties. Tonight we've heard an incessant barrage of just about every swearword in the English language apart from "Belgium" and the one enclosed within "S****horpe". Despite this, the sound has only been excluded from some of the relatively calm periods during and after the post-midnight arguments. It seems to me that advert breaks are also being used to cover the same problems. If I'm correct, I doubt that the petition will prove successful until those problems are solved. In case I'm wrong, however, I'm signing the petition anyway.

The external sound is probably coming from outside Three Mills Island Studios in Three Mill Lane, E3,

If that was the case, then i'm sure there would be these same gaps on the 'net feed, which I don't think there is (in fact, i'm sure there isn't).

I think you're correct about the lack of gaps (or, rather, lack of switches to external sound) in the net broadcasts, but I don't think that counters my theory. It does, however, suggest that the problem, if I'm right, exists in the equipment that deals specifically with the E4 feed. If a sound switch has been installed for that feed then it might be that switch that's malfunctioning. I'm currently at a loss to otherwise explain the couple of hours of uninterrupted expletives last night followed by frequent gaps during the subsequent calm period after 3 am. I suppose that the sound people could have been as drunk as the housemates. If that's so, however, I (and others posting here) have noticed such discrepancies so often that I suggest they all be placed into rehab immediately.

The only gaps you get on the 'net are the ooooh so frequent "Re-buffering...." gaps in the real video/audio stream that seem to happen more often than not.

You don't get many rebuffering stops on the streams if you're on broadband, but it's annoying cos you loose ALL sound for the gaps...

The sound that covers the gaps are pre-recordedand not live. Probablt from some tape they made before te show went on air.

There were problems with the E4 feed as reported in Broadcast and said to be sorted out within the first week of the live feeds.

I can't quite see that all the recent gaps are faults as it is a noise it is being replaced by. Before was just silence but the sound of the train / tube / wind says to me that there isn't a fault - just lousy censoring!

It seems odd to me that external noise should be prerecorded. Why not use live sound, total silence or something more entertaining? If it is a tape then it seems to be constantly running, as the sound that covers one gap doesn't seem to follow immediately on from the last sound (e.g. plain wind when a train had not previously completely its passage). Does anyone have a train schedule for the local station?

Again, if it is censorship then it seems to be extremely incompetent. Barrages of swearing are getting through while apparently innocuous conversations are being viewed in silence. What broadcasting restrictions can this enforce at 2 am?

Last night they were cutting it after midnight every time they discussed cups of tea. Controversial stuff.

The train sound effects are from 2 sources.
1. London Underground District line (nearest station West Ham) this would have a frequency of around every 10 minutes in each direction during daytime (increasing in the AM and PM peaks)

2. The C2C line out of Fenchuch Street - frequency daytime around 15-25 minutes each way.

You can sometimes see them trundle past, on a the long shot of the house, that E4 normally cut to after a break.
Given this is it possible that the train sounds during daytime/ early evening swearage might actually be live - However I'm pretty certain that between 1 and 5am, there are no services on the above rail lines, so If you do hear a train during this time period, that's probably on tape.

Which sound effect belong to which type of train - i'll leave for another day...

but why is it then that it stops you hearing those in the house and surely they at e4 can turn up the volume on those speaking so that you can hear it over the sounds?

Harlequin, no trains pass through fenchurch street at all, they only stop and turn round again! so no none actually pass through!

The sound gaps are now getting worse. They are completely unnecessary. On Saturday when BB was running them through their pieces of music we kept losing the sound which ruined the whole thing. There shouldn't be any censoring. Another example of Britain - the nanny state!

Thanks, C.K. That certainly seems to indicate that the sound is (or was -- the few gaps that I noticed last night were entirely silent) pre-recorded, although the concept still seems rather silly to me.

I don't think that the night-time gaps are there to eliminate obscenity, as enormous amounts of swearing are frequently heard (and there's also now a "bad language" warning before the E4 programme). If it is, indeed, censorship, what are they blocking? I don't think BB could be held accountable for libel as any opinions stated are clearly those of the housemates[*]. Could it be the prevention of information being passed to the outside world? Surely the housemates aren't attempting that that often. Could a popular topic of discussion be possible slanders they were told by BB staff before entering the house?

[*] I suppose it's possible that they could have been scared by recent Internet ISP "publication" cases, but those that I know of have been settled out of court with no legal precedent being set. In any case, liability as it applies to television broadcasting is well established while that relating to the Net is still in a state of flux. That being the case, I would expect the Net feeds to be more heavily censored than the E4 one.

On the day the nominations were announced last week,

Big Brother announced
"in alphabetical order - Paul and" [blank as train noise was played]

I was screaming at the set in anger but guessed it was stuart based upon the pictures being broadcast.

When I watched the 'uncensored' version later, the editing was because of Helens outburst directly after the name stuart was announced.

She said something along the lines of

"Oh bloody hell does that mean i have to spend another week in this bloody place"

Hardly X rated stuff Im sure you will agree and with all the technology available you think they could edit the 'bloody's' and leave the clean stuff without completely ruining the moment. At worst leave the word Stuart in and blank from that point onwards.

Well done Big Brother. With your rusty knife editing technique you are ruining a great programme.

Chris Moyles on Radio 1 made a challenge last week. Prizes (He didn't say what apart from "Being our friend forever") for the first person to get the message "Chris Moyles is watching" to the house guests. One suggestion was to parachute into the garden.
