2.4Ghz video senders and WLAN aerials
This may be a silly question but could I connect a high gain directional WLAN antenna such as this one sold in Maplin (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=38205) to a video sender receiver to get better range? The video sender has a removable stick aerial and as they both operate on the same frequencies (2.4GHz) I should be able to use it to receive better signals, right?

Provided the connector fits (or can be bodged to fit
) then there is no obvious reason why it shouldn't work. The aerial could care less what information is actually being carried on the signals it is receiving. All it cares about is what frequency they are on. Provided the AV sender frequency is in the pass band of the aerial then it ought to work. But then again RF can be a bit of a black art so you never can be too absolute about what may happen. |

Thanks, that was kind of my thinking too. I just thought I'd ask if anyone knew any different or had any experience doing this.
I suppose adding one to the transmitter side would be breaking the rules as it would increase the erp? |

Not necessarily.
The blurb says it is designed to be connected to a wireless router or access point and presumably could also be used on a PC card. And since both ends of a wireless network transmit and receive it kind of follows that this aerial will boost both transmission and reception. I may not know the Wireless Telegraphy act by heart but I am fairly certain it is illegal to sell RF kit in the UK that would break the rules. One would hope Maplin would know that and either not sell it or make it pretty clear it cannot be used in the UK. |

Just a little update. I bought one of these corner WLAN antennas (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=38205) as it was a bit directional. After realising that the SMA connector almost matched the one for the video sender (it was missing the middle prong so a quick botch job fixed that) the new antenna did improve reception of the distant transmitter a bit, but probably not £20 worth of improvement.
