New lcd picture quality
I've just got a new Samsung lcd tv, and am using it with sky digital. Sometimes the picture quality seems excellent - mainly internal studio stuff ... and at other times quite poor - particularly in external scenes in dramas, where things look unsharp and snowy ... dark areas of the picture look particularly bad. I wondered what the problem might be?

Settings on the TV? Turn off all silly acronyms you do not understand, get contrast and brightness down to near the 1/2 way mark, turn sharpness to the minimum, then up 1 notch at a time till you are happy, it's usually only 10-15% up from zero/minimum.

Also make absolutely sure you're viewing in RGB, not PAL - switch it backwards and forwards a few times on the Sky Service/Picture menu - if you don't see an instant and obvious change, then you're not watching in RGB.
RGB gives you digital quality, PAL gives you analogue quality only, with all the added defects of PAL coding. |

The usual giveaway that you have no RGB, is that the picture has odd looking cross hatching all over it.
