New to Sony (Need Advice)

Hi Guy / Girls

Just thought i'd ask as i'm thinking of upgrading from a Thompson box to a Sony box, i'd kinda like to know what you think of the Sony PVR's, do they seem quite stable, to they release regular fixes for problems etc etc. I've already read through the comparison chart and all looks pretty good. but would like some advice before i go ahead and part with my well earned money.

Any help appreciated

What Sony model are you thinking of?

If it is the Sony SVR-S500 PVR I'd strongly suggest doing a bit of research here first. It's not built by Sony themselves, it is a badge engineered job from Beko. You could buy the same unit with a different badge, for less money, and a better EPG (14 days rather than 7days).

The SVR-S500 was discontinued ages ago (wasn't it?).

I think it was but my local Sony dealer is still trying to shift old stock. AFAIK however it is still the only Sony Freeview PVR, the others being DVD recorders, hence my asking the OP for the model they were looking at.

I don't have any personal experience of the 995 but I have an earlier model of Sony DVD recorder that I am generally pleased with. I would say however I also have a PVR so I don't use the Sony for timeshifting.

You mention having a Thomson at the moment - presumably that is a twin tuner PVR model? If so then I suspect the biggest issue you will face is Sony's DVD Recorders are single tuner (well to be pedantic one digital and one analogue tuner, but only one of them can be used at a time).

It's very much down to your viewing habits whether you need dual record or not. If you do then forget Sony. On the plus side if you don't need dual record you gain the ability to easily archive to DVD if long term storage is important to you.
