I don't really know much about the topic but I don't believe American sets have SCART inputs for a start.

Difficult question. A US TV wont have scart sockets, or a freeview tuner. Its also quite likely that it wont accept a composite PAL signal.
This only leaves you with HDMI. If you have sky HD, freesat HD, bt vision or virgin media v+ box, then these will all output 720p/1080i signals over HDMI. However, there is still a difference, US tv is 60hz & pal regions use 50hz. This shouldn't really be a problem, especially on sonys, but I cannot say for definite if this would work. -Chris |

If americans don't use scarts, what do they have as an alternative? I've been wondering for ages.

But we have those as well as scart? Ah well just more for people to get confused with I suppose.

Most TV's produced nowadays though are fairly broad in their input types, i.e. PAL\NTSC etc... aren't they? As long as you have some sort of external source then I'd have thought you'd be fine.
That's as much of a question as it an answer btw.

This question pops up every now and then... the general opinion seems that although TV's sold in Europe will cope with most world standards, TV's bought in North America might only cope with NTSC and not PAL, also the onboard tuner won't be any use in UK/Europe, the voltage will be 110v (might have a multivoltage capability but might not)
No scarts but will have HDMI, component, SVideo, composite rca. Sony won't likely honour the guarantee either. Personally unless I got it real cheap I wouldn't bother. |

This question cropped up not so long ago and the general consensus was it would be more hassle than it's worth.
As others have pointed out the power supply will be 110 v not 240v, also unlikely to have SCART connections and the on-board tuner will be NTSC not PAL. I seem to recall Nigel Goodwin noted some other potential issues around compatibility with European kit as well. |

OK, it's a REALLY, REALLY bad idea - American sets are crippled so as to be only useable in the USA. From a UK point of view, wrong mains voltage, you have no Teletext, no NICAM, no Freeview, no PAL (certainly not via internal tuner) - it 'may' work to some extent from an external AV source, maybe in PAL, but perhaps only via RGB - this assumes it will work at 625 line 50Hz, many won't even do this.
A European sourced set though may very well work perfectly in the states, depending if it's PSU will work down as low as 110V. There is essentially no chance of converting American TV's for use in the UK. I've had a brand new Sharp portable in the workshop for about two years now (the customer has never collected it) - he bought a number of them from the USA to install in boats he was building, and he wanted US standard sets. He had a couple left over, and wanted to know if they could be altered for the UK. It would work via RGB from a Sky HD box, but not via Component or anything else. |

I've had experience of this too. Sony would be an absolute no no. Pioneer sets are multi standard for AV inputs, ie sky or HD would work, and they do accept 576 line component, but any TV tuners, no chance. The other ones that work are Panasonic professional panels, no probs there. Both of those are multi voltage too.
