I was watching a bit of the 'magic' channel on Sky earlier at a mates house, and it was a 'whatever happened to...' show, playing one hit wonders really.

It got me thinking, can a successful one hit wonder make enough money for it's artist, if it keeps getting played regularly on various TV and Radio progs, or if it cropped up in an advert??

Just wondering that's all!

Good question, but I doubt that anybody could live off the royalties from just one song, even if it is played a lot on radio etc.

A lot of artists have a terrible royalty rate and the vast majority of the money usually ends up with the record company, not the person who wrote and performed it.

But I'm not saying, for instance, that someone like Gary Kemp hasn't made a nice few bob from "True" (which has been played on US radio more than 3 million times) or Sting doesn't appreciate the revenue from "Every Breath You Take". But these guys were hardly one-hit wonders.

Definately... It is the best life... Make one song - live off it / get laid off it for the rest of your life - Tis the lazy man's way - but sometimes this is the best path to take.

Hey...did they play Vanessa Amorosi - Absolutely Everybody on the One Hit Wonders show? I hope they didn't because she is definately not a one hit wonder.....how dare they put her under that category! Actually, about a month ago they added her to the 'Dancing Queen's' show

I suppose if someone wrote a theme for a soap or something like that it would be played so many times that the writer could live off the earnings.

Well, it was never a hit, but it sounds to me like Archibald Hill might be on a beach somewhere smiling at his good fortune.

Hugh Grant's character lived off the royalties of a song his dad wrote in About A Boy...

What do you mean that was just a film?

I know it wasn't a record but I seem to remeber that David Dundas who wrote the original Channel 4 ident tune made a rather large amount from it - all for just 4 notes.

The people who wrote the four note tune for Intel are making a pretty penny

When will someone realise its a sample from Close Encounters of the Third Kind ?
