Can you not accept that just as people have individual characters and personalities, that people will react differently to the death of a much loved pet ? I have lost people I loved dearly (too many recently), and I also lost my beloved cat in June. I grieve for them all ..................and I would not say that in comparison losing a cat "is a piece of piss" as you so insensitively suggest

We are not all the same, and do not get affected to the same degree about everything.

I can quite honestly say without shame, that when my dog died, it was more devastating than when both my parents died - and they would have been the first to agree with me.

My elderly cat died last year aged 18 years of age; he had had kidney problems and when he was opened up, it was decided that it was best to end his pain.

I know that he had had a long life, but it still hurt when he went. I cried for days.

I know this may sound gruesome, but I had him cremated and his ashes were put in a wooden sleeping cat ornament. I now keep him on a shelf at home.

Cats have always been part of my family and I cannot imagine a life without one.

I've lost 3 cats and a dog over the years and it really hurts, The last little cat was hit by a car just a few months ago, luckily it was instant.
Some people think so little of your feelings because they judge them as "invalid" Imagine ridiculing love in any form, I just don't get it.
Some people just don't understand, ignore them, our lives are richer for being able to feel such emotion for an animal even though it hurts so much when they go.
Watch out for the grief for your Dad resurfacing, bereavement is a funny thing and can come back to you years later. I hope you find comfort in the thought that you gave your cat a good and happy life for as long as you could

I totally agree with what you've said Radiomaniac. We are all different, and thank god for that.

I've lost both parents, very close friends and pets over the years, and the pain of loosing them all has been immense.
We all feel pain at some times in our lives, and whilst some are able to deal with that better, others may take a little longer. Nothing wrong in that, it's just their way of dealing with things.
So, for someone like 3 second memory to feel devastated, about a loss to them at this moment in time, is not one for us to question really. The family are upset at loosing a much loved pet, and knowing how that feels I offer my sympathies to them and a few words of support to comfort them.

i totally agree with this i felt really guilty that i was more upset over losing ossie than i was my mum but my mum would have expected that she lived a good long life we are having ossie cremated because we want to i promised him he would come home and he will

My love and thoughts to everyone who has recently lost a beloved moggie.

We lost our beautiful Floyd 3 weeks ago yesterday. It was very sudden (not an RTA though), he was only 4 and yes both hubby and i have grieved the loss of a member of our family.

Grief affects people in different ways and I completely understand how those people who have been devastated feel. I can think back and remember the daft things he did but sometimes i remember him and it's heartbreaking. I allow myself that time to grieve and don't give 2 stuffs to anyone who says he was "just a cat" - in fact i'd probably knock anyone out who laughed at me for grieving for him!

I know how you must be feeling. My beautiful cat was hit by a car in January 2007. To make matters worse, my other cat pined for him so much, she died three weeks later.

I still miss them both, but have since adopted a stray. She's not keen on going out, I'm glad to say.

OP - I'm so sorry for your loss, we lost our kitten whilst we were away on holiday, my neighbour was looking after both our boys and on the Wednesday found one of them our lovely Charlie Marley moocakes dead in the garden.

Please fine solice in the fact that you, like ourselves had him there to say your goodbyes and put him to rest in the garden - we decided to get a new kitten in July and he went missing in August and we haven't seen him since .... believe me that in itself is totally unbearable and I am finding hard to deal with

So sorry for your loss. I'm a Christian too, but totally believe that we'll be reunited with our loved ones (including the furry ones) 'afterwards'. I had 3 cats, When the first one was killed in a traffic accident, my boss was so understanding it was lovely. But I lost a beloved one last year (aged 16) and had to take time off - this boss clearly thought I was mad. As other posters have said, the saddest thing was trying to comfort our remaining cat, who was clearly grieving - so much so that he had kidney failure. Fortunately, a brilliant vet sorted him out, and he's still with us. Take all the time you need - after all, a pet is one of the family.

Well I'm a big ugly grown man, yet I still sometimes dream about my two dogs, who died 7 and 13 years ago. Usually it involves my delight and astonishment that they're still alive, both going wild with excitement as they greet me.

Waking up and realising it's not real is like a punch in the guts, let me tell you.

Me too Carnivalist . I had a vivid dream about a dog I lost 11 years ago recently. Wonderful to hold her again, just for a little while.

Im afraid I used to be the same as your twonky boss, I was never an animal lover and could never understand the connection.
However, 14 months ago, I got a kitten. It was a spur of the moment thing.
Well she is the most gorgeous loving little thing in the world, and just the very thought of loosing her upsets me, so I can't imagine what you must be going through??

Your boss needs to reassess her 'values' if thats the case. Under no circumstances is it 'just a cat'. I had people say 'it's only a dog' to me before....I wasn;t best pleased!

I am so overwhelmed with all your experiences and such lovely comments, thank you all lots and lots and lots. It's comforting to know that you have all seen a much positive side in time to come. We're still heartbroken about our sweetheart.

As for the posters who lack basic natural empathy, then that is their problem not mine. Ive lost so many people in my life and have experienced grief in a huge way like we all have. Just because we loved and adored our animal and have now lost her, it doesn't mean that we can get over it in an hour or two. She was part of our family. When a family member dies it is absolutely heartbreaking. To those people again, boy/girl racers should have their licences removed immediately and be made to resit intensive tests and be monitored, because although it was our dear sweetheart that got killed, the next thing is that it could be a child that is mown to the ground!! Cat poo is nothing, there are always ways to prevent them from sh**ing in your garden. Just be grateful for your lot in life and I can sincerely say that from experience and don't be so quick to judge the feelings and lives of others.

sorry to hear about your cat, we lost our cat to the road 2 years ago, thankfully his brother from the same litter still wanders about the place looking like he owns it

it's really hard to accept at first but as with anything it gets better with time. we often talk about the mad things he did when he was alive now and it always makes us laugh out loud so it's nice to have the memories

I have just seen this thread. We lost our 'Brucie' just over 3 years ago now .... and i still miss that puddy cat. He was a little brown faced angel. His piercing blue eyes pierced my heart when he died.

I loved him, and i miss him.

i had to have my little treasure put to sleep 3 years ago now, and yes i still miss him dearly.

A pet isnt a just a pet to some folk its afamily member and we greive as we would for a family member.

It does get easier, and the 1 thing i have to hold on aremy memories locked deeo inside my heart forever.
