Did anyone see Dispatches on channel 4 earlier in the week about wine? Some of the stuff that goes in the big brand stuff isn't very pleasant - eg milk, eggs, artificial yeast and gelatine. The local Sainsburys were giving tasters of a couple of Hardy's wines, which tasted pretty awful - so I would strongly advise not purchasing Hardy's and Blossom Hill next time you buy some wine.

The programme also confirmed the commonly held suspicion that most half price wines sold at supermarkets, are only worth the half price in the first place!

I dont get what you mean here. So these tasters didn't like Hardys or Blossom Hill? So what? Whats that got to do with my taste in wine?

I didn't see that program but i've seen a program before where egg whites were used to clarify the wine.

I'm not sure of the scandal with using gelatine.
Or using artificial yeast as long it is non toxic.

Some of the methods may be to enable the vegetarian/vegan label.

That's hardly surprising especailly considering the bulk they could buy them in. Not as bad a restaurants and pubs though.

lol remember the bit in wine that gets you drunk is ethanol.....a poison, so i doubt its worth getting worried about a few egg whites and gelaine.

Most products on half price offers in Supermarkets are only worth the half price amount anyway, not just wine.

To be honest, if you listened to everything these programs and other media outlets said you wouldn't leave the house for fear of catching something or consuming something not good for you.

Drink and eat what you like. Nothing wrong with eating anything in moderation.

That isn't the point that is being made. The point is that within the wine industry, the consumer is being prevented from making an informed choice, because by law the industry does not have to disclose what actually goes into its product. And in the case of gelatine for example, that makes it unsuitable for vegetarians.

Yes I agree entirely that the 'Dispatches' style, and particularly that of the pious Jane Moore, is sensationalist and scaremongering. But nevertheless, this one fact I have cited is in itself an undeniably shocking travesty.

Sorry I meant that there were free tasters of Hardys wine in my local Sainsburys - which I tried, and thought were awful! You can buy far nicer wine for similar money than that - hopefully minus the egg and gelatine as well! Clientfan is right when he says there has to be proper ingredient listing on bottles of wine - how many veggies have been drinking certain brands of wine, having no idea it contained a meat product?

Ah right cool.

I agree though, there should be ingredients listed on wine too.

Wines produced in Italy undergo strict tests - they were introduced after a nasty incident in the 70's which killed some people after wine was added with a poisonous substance.
At least from the health&safety point of view, Italian wines are certainly safe.
