Pleasantly surprised that Gary was so awful.

Austen surprised me - he was excellent (still think he looks like Les Dennis).

I'd never hear of Tom Chambers - so with all the talk about him being handsome, sexy etc. I was surprised that imo he looks quite ordinary.

He reminds me of someone and I just can't think who that it.

Yep I remember Robin Williams.

John was much better than I thought he'd be.

Gary was much worse. He always seems a perfectionist, full of himself and quite arrogant so I expected him to be really good for some reason.

I suppose being a perfectionist means striving to deliver the best performance you possibly can.

Sometimes you'll find that striving for perfection just isn't enough if the natural isn't there.

But at least he gave it his best shot.

I thought Gary took the criticism well and so didn't seem arrogant. However I agree he wasn't very good.

I thought John would be ok with the waltz. I was surprised Andrew Castle managed the cha cha cha reasonably well (athough not a great fan of his).

Austin Healey was very good.

I was impressed by John, Austin and Tom, and I was surprised by how bad Gary was.

I'm unsure on the whole Gary thing - the first thing my mother said on the 'phone was "Eee, that Gary Rhodes thought he was great, didn't he?", and I kind of agree, but then he took the criticism quite well, so, I don't know.

I'll take him if you don't want him?

John I thought did amazingly well. It is so hard to make the dance not look seedy when you have a much older man with such a young glitzy woman, but they did it perfectly. I thought the Winnie the Pooh comment very apt.

Loved Austin too.

Mark made me cry because I've never seen him dressed like that and he looked the spitting image of a relative we lost to cancer a couple of years ago. Took me quite by surprise. Couldn't concentrate on his performance as a result. Looking forward to seeing him in a latin outfit as I don't think I'll make the same connection if he is half dressed.

Gary wasn't good but his arrogance adds to that and I fear he may go, or certainly be in the bottom two.

Girls - Rachel looked OK. Christine does look like she has potential.

Jodie looked like a stunning, waxwork. Gillian looked as if she will be this years poor.

Austin he was excellent, thought he'd probably be okay sportsmen are ,but he really was outstanding...and John who I thought would be useless proved to be a little gem,so much better than I expected.
Disappointed in Gary,I honestly thought he'd be much better and ,sad to say the legend Phil Daniels, not very good at all.

I was shocked by John; he looked so relaxed on the dancefloor.

I was surprised that Gary was so terrible; his reputation as a perfectionist made me think he'd be trying really hard (or at least that he'd be terrible in a different way; he was sloppy this week and that was something I had definitely not predicted).

it suprised me how awful the women were this year. I might not always support the female celebs but they are normally a lot better technically then the men.
Judging by the group dance i think most the lads could easily out dance most the women.

Austin. Amazing and far better than I expected.

Austin Healey surprised me by being so good on first night. John surprised me by being so - as the judges put it - charming with his waltz.

At the other end of the scale Gary surprised me - though not so much Gary as Karen. The music was more suited to jive, and the choreography was dire, so Gary didn't stand a chance.

And the girls surprised me, cos they were so bad!!! As I've said elsewhere, this could be down to lack of practice time, so will give them the benefit of the doubt until next week!

Just caught the show on BBCi and was amazed at how good Austin was! His Waltz was a week 7/8 performance and for once I didn't roll my eyes when Len gave a 9.

Tom was the most disappointing and I agreed with Craig when he said Tom gave a "smug" performance. I know it's week 1 and we shouldn't be too critical but given his previous dance training, the performance from Austin was what I was expecting from Tom.

Austin was very good and I sat through the whole dance with a grin on my face. It was so charming.

John was pretty good too. What a lovely bloke.

Considering he's a perfectionist, Gary was bad. Very bad.

All the women suprised me by being pretty damn terrible.

Gary Rhodes surprised me. He's in great nick and known to be a pefectionist, but holy smoke he has got about as much rhythm as this table.
John Sargeant surprised me, because I thought he was very good. His was easily the second best dance of the night, after Austin.

The women look a bit ropey compared to what we saw of the women at this stage last year. Heather and Rachel were the only ones who didn't look like heffalumps on Prozac. I know it's early days and they will have been spending most of their time rehearsing for their real dances next week, but you can say the same for the women at this stage last year. And at this stage last year we were all raving about the women. It's probably six of one and half a dozen of the other - last year's men started off badly and the women looked good in comparison, whereas this year it's the other way round.

Austen exceeded expectations. I'd thought he was a bit short and stocky before, and might not look that good with Erin, particularly at ballroom. He looked fine, and had great technique too.

I was a bit disappointed with Mark. I'd expected his grasp of technique to have been the best of anyone, but it wasn't.

Surprised (pleasantly) by Ola's catsuit too.

With the women they spent more time doing lifts then actual dancing but that is more the choreographers fault.
Gabby, Kelly, Penny and Alesha were all miles better in their group dance. Im suprised none of the judges commented on how bad the female group dance was this year.
IT is pritty much the reverse of last year regarding the men and women, im hoping for better things in the male group dance next week.
One thing i will say is i loved Rachels dress.

Well...

Austin and Erin, were definitely the best, all im saying is if he's this good now what will he be like in 2 or 3 weeks time!

Surprise for me was John Seargent, i wasn't expecting him to be any good but he ACTUALLY WAS!!!

Poor Lilia, she'll be out very soon.

Has to be Austin.

I was waiting for the "rugby hands" to appear and instead i sat there with tingles down my spine and my mouth hanging open!

Austin and John both surprised me - both far more elegant than I was expecting. Mark did very well too - I expected him to be more uncomfortable with the waltz than he was - loved all three of their dances.

I was completely fascinated by that catsuit! It had a life of it's own - she looked fantastic in it too
