Finally got one last week and it is FANTASTIC. It is now my fave gadget of all time I have hundreds of 12" singles from late 70's and 80's and a few boxes of 7" singles, most of which arent on cd. Of course it has to be recorded at normal speed, so it is a bit time consuming. But to suddenly be able to hear some of my old fave 12"'s on my ipod. The sound quality on many is still better than cd. Cant recommend it enough

I've got one too. I only have around 20 vinyls but the tracks on them are not available on CD or for download so it was amazing hearing them for the first time.

I'm looking for something similar for my mother birthday present. She has boxes full of records but we haven't got a record player anymore. I was looking for something to play and also transfer the vinyl to cd will a usb turntable do this?

Not on its own, you'll need to transfer the vinyl to wav/mp3 files using a program like Golden records and then burn them to CD using your PC.

Can someone explain how this works? How does the iPod know what songs they are and how are they organised on the iPod if the names don't come up? iyswim

So is this what I'm looking for? It says the software is included so no need to buy another program to do the job.

They work like this:

Turntable > USB connection > Computer > Computer software (lots of them come with a thing called Audacity to record them with).

The program allows you to save them as an audio file (e.g. MP3) so you can then put them onto CD or an MP3 player.

You install the turntable and it then allows you to play the record whilst recording. Because records are analogue, they have to be recorded in real time.

gemma, that's the type of thing you need, yes.

I got a plugin for Winamp (music player) which allows me to play the vinyls via my laptop without having to record them first. It's great.

Mapplin do then for about £90. They told me that they will soon have one in that does them DIRECT to cd. It will be about £250. Once the software is installed it is DEAD easy.

You can already buy direct-to-CD ones.

Example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/DIO-LP2CD-LP...2034134&sr=8-5

Not cheap, though, and it'll probably be better to do it to the PC first so you can chop off silence.

You have to name them yourself track by track using something like Windows Media Player which as I've found is a pain in the backside. Months later I still have dozens of MP3's labelled 'untitled 03, untitled 04' etc

You're converting an analogue signal to a digital one, that's why. It's like copying a VHS video to DVD. You won't get any extra information other than what you see in the screen and you then have to label the DVD yourself.
