Aye true, but in this day and age we should just be thankful that there's 18 year olds anywhere who don't want to be Beyonce. Leona Lewis or Girls Aloud clones.

Maybe he was singing Mark Ronsons 'version' of Valerie?

Just as the girl who lost the weight was singing Eva Cassidys version of song bird?

Versions of songs are different....which is why they're called versions....

I liked the girl, but i can remember last year Niki sang Eva Cassidy's version in the Semi Finals, and i must say the girl that sang it tonight had a really weak voice.
Niki's version was really strong and powerful and i dnt think the girl tonight was as good.

What a pantomime that was - like Cowell really did have a last minute change of mind. Who writes the script?

Am so happy somebody else got annoyed by that. IT is not 'by' somebody if they covered it. Fleetwood Mac's version is superior, with them being possibly one of the best bands ever (IMO). Yes, Eva Cassidy had a good voice but highly overrated and she did not write anything. I am also fiercely protective because Songbird was my wedding song, and the DJ only had Eva's version so i had to provide Fleetwood Mac's cd. However, on reflection, some people unfamiliar with that version had tears in their eyes on hearing it for the first time (but that could have been our horrendous shuffle across the dance floor and tears of laughter). Rant over. she was ok but not a patch on some of the 'version's I've heard before. Sob story again!

I'm bloody sick of Over the Rainbow, Songbird or Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy.

FFS it's Judy Garland, Fleetwood Mac and Sting! Learn your music history you philistines!

Eva Cassidy's version is slightly different.

I prefer the All Angels version though.

sorry to be pedantic but Songbird was sung by Christine McVie not Stevie Nicks. However you are right, the original is the best.

I seem to remember a story that The Zutons, prior to appearing at one of this years festivals were asked if they would be doing their cover of Mark Ronson's /Amy Winehouse's Valerie - they just shrugged their shoulders and said probably.

They were probably hacked off that it was being called a cover by them when in fact theirs was the original - they released it in 2006, Mark Ronson and Amy did theirs in 2007.

There are many 18 year olds and younger who sing and play music that is not by the artists you mentioned or their type.

It does annoy me too when contestants sing songs recently covered and they refer to them as being by the most recent artist to cover it. I can understand the young contestants doing so but the judges and presenters

Eva Cassidy's version is slightly different.
As is everything Eva Cassidy covered. She changed melodies so much it was beyond the point where you have to wonder why she didn't bother writing her own material.

Stop dissing Eva Cassidy - the woman had the most beautiful voice I ever heard.

I don't care whether she covered every song ever written - everybody covers everybody it's nothing new.

I find the Eva Cassidy version of Songbird more memorable.

That's your opinion. I have mine which is that she was a good singer who covered a lot of other GREAT singers songs, and then tragically died. Unfortunately it now means that she's revered as though she's some kind of deity.

She was a good singer, that's it, end of. She didn't write any of those songs that people keep giving her credit for, and that's what irritates me, not Eva herself.

I did find it amusing at the time.

There was another similarish incident in the 1970's just after Simon And Garfunkle split.

Paul Simon was being interviewed by Annie Nightingale on OGWT and asked Paul Simon (something like) if he found it difficult writing songs without Art Garfunkle. Paul, very politely answered that he had never written songs with AG. Cue one very embarresed Ms Nightingale.
