Yesterday I witnessed such a horrible thing, I can't stop thinking about it

I was in my city centre and about to get on a bus when I noticed an elderly, clearly drunk man carrying (actually more like dangling) this tiny kitten from his hand, it must have been about 5-6 weeks old. The poor little thing was clearly in distress and was constantly yelping. The man ended up boarding the same bus as mine, and he was carrying a plastic bag with a huge bottle of vodka in it. He was already clearly very intoxicated.

The kitten was just sort of grasping onto his coat by its claws, he dropped the kitten a few times and a lady on the bus ended up holding the little thing until the man came to his bus stop. He had no carry case for it, nothing.

Someone on the bus even offered a paper bag to place the kitten in just to get it home - to which he refused and stuffed it under his coat. I was so angry that I shouted that he was suffocating the poor thing. When he stood up he nearly fell over. He then got off the bus and walked into a block of flats just outside the bus stop, so I am assuming that's where he lives.

I just can't stop thinking about this poor little kitten, that man was in no fit state to look after himself let alone a kitten, he couldn't understand a word anyone was saying to him. Now I just feel so guilty for not doing anything, at the time I was even going to offer him money for the kitten, I was that convinced that he should not be looking after a pet.

I have called the SSPCA today and they have said they can't start an investigation as I don't know which flat number he lives in. I really can't leave it at that, I need to find out. Yes, I am a big animal lover and some may think I am over-reacting but I feel really strongly that this kitten is in danger and I need to help it. I am considering going to the block of flats and asking around as to where he lives.

What would you do in this situation? I am totally overcome with guilt and need to do something

Thanks for any help.

If you know the block - just go around with a clip-board to do a quick survey (use your initiative) and then you will hopefully find the flat he lives at. This may take time - but if it gets this owner banned from keeping any further animals then your work is done and best of luck - keep us posted!

Thanks, I was thinking of just going around and asking a neighbour just as I am genuinely concerned about the kitten. I was wondering what I would do if he actually answered the door though...I will drive back there and keep you posted.

I'm sorry I don't have any advice but I am very happy that you feel so strongly about this animals do not deserve to be treated that way. I hope you get somewhere cos it's just not fair. Good for you for caring about an innocent animal so much that you feel you want to help it to the extent that you are. Good luck and I hope you get somewhere.

Thanks My family think I am mad for going this far with it but I feel that I need to do something. I just drove down to the block of flats - security entry so I couldn't get in, I buzzed the first flat and the voice sounded like him, I then had a peek in the window and saw some cat-related things lying around, so I have phoned the SSPCA and explained the situation to them. They are going to call me if they need any further information and have said to call in 7-10 days if I haven't heard anything.

I feel so much better knowing that it's going to be investigated.

Thats fantastic. You have acted on it very quickly, if the animal is in danger speed is essential. x

Yeah, true. I just hope he is out of danger soon, I just can't stop thinking about the poor little thing, but I do feel better now knowing that he may be out of danger soon. Here's hoping.

Well done you should be proud of yourself if he can do that kind of thing in public goodness knows what he is doing to the poor thing behind closed doors. I really hope you get somewhere. There is too much animal cruelty going on and it needs to be stopped. People like that need to be locked up and people like you should be given a medal.

Good for you for taking notice and trying too do something Please do not let this drop until that poor creature is away from that vile man and in safe hands. If he is capable of doing such things in public then goodness knows what he may do in the privacy of his own home.

Make sure you ring and give whatever information you can remember Animals depend on us.

Good luck.

Well done Cuppa - you should be proud of yourself!

There are far too many people who would have turned away saying "None of my business" and not do a damn thing.

A few weeks back I saw a girl lying in the middle of the street, and instead of trying to help, people were just ignoring her and stepping over her.

When I helped her back to her feet I even had some no-hoper sneering "Just leave the slag; she's probably pissed."

Turns out she wasn't well and had fainted in the street, but no-one even batted an eyelid...

People do drive me absolutely mad sometimes!

Yeah, she was fine in the end and I managed to get her mum on the phone to come and collect her, but I was seething for days...how can people ignore someone lying in the street like that?

I seriously don't get it.

Someone was having an epileptic seizure in the street once, and the child I look after has epilepsy so I knew what to do. People were saying "Oh leave him he's drunk" He was lying on a concrete floor and could easily have smashed his head open during the fit.

I put him in the recovery position, put his head on my lap and rang for an ambulance.

There is no way on earth I could have just walked on by.

Oh well done we need more people like you in this world. People who would go out of their way to help someone not someone who would leave someone in danger.

Sadly, people think "confidence trickster" these days when they see people having a bad time in the street.

A friend of mine collapsed on the underground from a diabetic issue and people just stepped over him.

Well done for semi-rescuing the poor little kitten from the clutches of an old drunk. I don't know who is worse off,a kitten owned by a drunk,or the drunk himself being so lonely that he has to drink too much.

Hi everyone,

Thought I'd post an update about this as I got back in touch with the SPPCA as I hadn't heard anything.

All they had on the system was that the inspector had had a word with the owner but that was all the information they had. The lady said she would get the inspector to call me to explain more about what happened.

Just received a call there and the inspector said he had given a few words of advice to the man, advised him that he should not have had the cat out without suitable carrying case etc, and also that he should not have had it out whilst drunk.

He said the man fully acknowledged that he had been drinking and that it woudln't happen again. I am assuming that his home environment is suitable for the cat to be living in and that it's now not in any danger.

I feel so much better that I actually did something about this, and wanted to thank everyone on here who supported my decision to do so and like me, were concerned about the safety of this poor little kitten.

I'm late to comment as per usual, but well done. It's nice that some people like yourself actually care enough about what's happening around them to intervene.

Thank you for updating us I think it's great what you did, hopefully the man in question will realise how irrisponsible he was, and treats the little kitten with the love and care he/she deserves
