I usually buy mature cheddar slices from Sainsburys, just to use for toasties, they're about £1.50-£1.75 for a pack of 10 slices.

Trying to cut the food bills, I bought the mild economy version the other week, and even though they had been done in the oven*, I could still taste the difference.

* I use large flat rolls, sliced in half, use a slice of ham, a slice of cheese, no butter, replace the top, wrap in foil and cook in a hot oven for about 15 mins. It's the usual weekend lunch in our house.

Even the Tesco value stuff tastes more like cheese than that mush.

Yes, most of the cheese slices are tasteless plastic, though there are some that do have taste, but are still like plastic, they are also full of substitute and other rubbish. However that doesn't change the fact that mild cheddar is still tasteless plastic / rubber.

Tesco value mature cheddar isn't that bad either, it's just mild cheddar is be virtue it is mild cheddar is going to be and can not be anything other than tasteless plastic / rubber.

For anyone who hasn't tried it, I can thoroughly recommend Marks and Spencer's Cornish Cruncher Cheddar. That's the only cheese I buy now - best one I've ever tasted.

Never EVER buy cheap cheese, or cheddar claiming to be 'mild' or 'medium'.
You might as well chew on an insole.

The minimum strength cheddar to buy is 'strong'.

Most British cheeses I buy, regardless of make, quality or strength, taste of nothing much.

I now buy Dutch or Swiss cheeses.

Mild's not the word, especially Sainsbury's onw which should be called "no taste" cheddar

I took my elderly neighbour shopping yesterday and she bought 2x packets of Aldi Red Leicester
