Inept at breaking an egg...

I just treated myself to fried egg on toast - yum.
I consider myself fairly capable in the kitchen with the majority of tasks but do you think I can break an egg and manage not to get any shell in the frying pan?
Is there a skill to it?? Seriously, genuine request. I stink at it and dread the cracking open of eggs when cooking. Do I use a knife, edge of frying pan, spatula etc to crack it open?

I either tap it too soft so I have to hit it again therefore getting small minute fragments of shell everywhere or i tap it too hard therefore breaking my yolk!

Any tips?

I just tap it on the side of the bowl. If any shell falls into it,I just pick it out with a knife.

I would not break an egg straight into a frying pan.

tap it just right

You could break it into a bowl or small jug first. If you do get shell in it then you can fish them out. A good tip for this is to use the main shell to get any pieces. They tend to get magnetised somehow.

I cradle an egg in the palm of my hand and tap it hard with a knife.
It can then be poured into a bowl as others above have suggested.

I tap the side with the back of a knife blade. And put it in a cup or on a plate first so I can fish the shell out. Thanks for the tip of using the big shell to attract it, I never knew that one!
