[N00B] Ipod question

Hi all

I am generally clue up about what's what with electrical technology, however the Ipod is a little bit of a mystery to me as I've never actually owned one. I'm going to get my sister one for Christmas (I know, a little while off yet but I know it's what she'll be wanting this year) and I was just wondering what the status is with transferring music onto it? I'm going to get her one of the new 8GB Nano's and before I do decide to buy it, I want to check whether you can only transfer music purchased through itunes or whether you can use it to transfer any music file. I might think about getting her a Sony mp3 player instead if it's only itunes bought content, as she wont use it that often for buying music.

Also, what's the likelihood that they're going to be impossible to get hold of this Christmas? If likely, how late can I safely leave it to get one? Oh, and is the price likely to drop at that time? The cheapest I'm seeing so far is £109.99.

Thanks in advance for all advice

The price won't drop. You use iTunes to manage your music. You can use CD music or music off the net or iTunes. Any music you put on iTunes will also go on the iPod.

I constantly use CDs to convert to my iPod - it's rather easy. It's just a simple affair of Rip, Select, Drag and Drop.

Or if you want to do more advanced things, you can set the encoder to MP3 - meaning that what you get when ripping from a CD will be converted to an mp3 file format as opposed to the default AAC format.

What generation are you looking to get? In truth there isn't a great deal of difference in price between say a 3rd and 4th... but still a little bit.
The Apple iPod Nano 8GB Black (4th Generation) costs £108.97 from Amazon
Apple iPod Nano 8GB Pink (3rd Generation) for £109 from Currys
Apple iPod Nano 8GB Black (2nd Generation)for £99.97 from Amazon Marketplace.

Thanks for the advice people, I just wouldn't get her one if it was restricted purely to itunes bought content.

LozPR: I'm looking at the 4G Nano in Pink. £109.99 on play.com is the best I've found thus far.

You won't find it any cheaper for the time being, they've only just been released.

Yeah, I know. I'm quite happy paying that much to be honest, my original question was just whether they're likely to go down towards Christmas as part of the normal competetive nature of retail at that time of year!!

Thanks for all the help everyone

I usually use flav ipod video converter to enjoy movies/music on my ipod because you can convert nearly all video/audio files to my ipod supported format...and free trial is available...
