Help! Loud Walkman required
For use while working in a factory!
After buying a Sony walkman for £40 i was disappointed when i found it just didnt have the loudness needed in the working environment i am in. So i got a refund. I know all about the dangers of loud music so no lecture required. What i do need is a loud portable cassette (not CD) with radio which has presets, bass boost but most of all a good loud sound. Can anyone recommend one? |

Good luck in finding one. There was legislation, I think it originated in France and now in most of Europe to prevent hearing damage and as Walkman’s were a primary concern most manufactures not wishing to be sued etc complied.

2 things affect the percieved loudness of a walkman:
The power output of the amplifier. This is normally limited to reduce power consumption, to extend battery life. The sensitivity of the headphones (the amount of sound they produce for each milliwatt of power). Probably best to buy a walkman that has the features and styling you want, then get a sensitive pair of headphones. The most sensitive over-the-ear 'phones I could find locally were Sony MDR-G52s from Currys. They will sound a lot better than the in-ear type given away with a walkman, and should go a lot louder. Certainly plenty loud enough with my Archos Jukebox. Cheers |

If the place you work is so loud that you can't hear a walkman then I should be more concerned about getting ear defenders as it sounds like you are inviting deafness. Getting a louder walkman will only multiply your problems here and you'll end up not being able to hear the walkman at all before too long.

Had same problems recently with a similarly priced Goodman CD walkman. Buying replacement earphones improved sound quality and raised volume significantly. As said above it is likely a deliberate move by the manufacturer to preserve hearing (especially of kids) and exclude liability.
