Homemade vs Takeaway - Part 2

Have you seen "Take on the takeaway"?

Don't you think it's slightly unfair that for a home cook you have to buy every ingredient in full, which includes jarred spices, vinegar, condiments, alcohol etc.

Plus the resturaunts have pre-made stocks, sauces, marinades and even meat/sauces prepared.

I'm not sure how they actually get a show out of it

I don't know the show you refer to but everything you list (jarred spices, vinegar, condiments, alcohol) all keep so could be considered an investment?

Its a good show, and yes they are stock ingredients.

Long term, yes, it's a good investment. But in the show they have a price challenge and if the chef is buying a full bottle of olive oil and soy and a jar of peppercorns then it eats into their budget.

Then on the speed aspect the chef cannot marinade meats or make base stocks in 20 mins so the takeaway will always have an advantage.

I realise it's more of an entertainment show than cookery show but I thought i'd mention it

Your missing the point of it (i dont mean entertainment wise).

But given these disadvantages they show in many episodes in the time it takes for the delivery you could have cooked it yourself and it can taste even better. Even the base stocks argument isn't that valid, because if you wanted you could make some at the weekend and freeze it as stockcubes (like i do), then just chuck a few in the wok.

I agree with your points. The takeaways have all the advantages.

Watched the new Jamie Oliver show tonight and they could probably learn more from some of the shows already on TV.

These families are obviously dependent on takeaway food so why not teach them to cook "takeaway" dishes?

Southern Fried Chicken would be easy, could even be done in the oven (see Silvana)
Chicken Kebab would also be good and they could easily do a healthy version of that to ween them off the fatty food.
If you think of it, Chicken Kebab is marinated Chicken with a salsa or salad in a pitta bread.


There are shows already on that do this type of stuff. Take On the Takeaway is the obvious one but I also remember "The Best" where Silvana Franco usually did a quick and easy version of a dish and came out level over all with the two chefs.

Chicken kebab from my local takeaway is damn healthy as it is.
