The ONLY thing that should matter is the voice
I know its been said a million times, but if one more person comes in the door with a tear jerking saga.... I will hurl!!! Its ridiculous now in the extreme, Nicky last year brought it to a new extreme. A new twist to this nonsense is when an average singer got through last week because she has lost 500 stone or something !!!! So bloody what......... I mean....... well done.... marvellous and all that for your health and self esteem etc.......but what has that got to do with a singing contest. How many average Joes were shown the door, just as average as her......but because they did not shrink down from elephantine proportions.... they are dumped. The producers fool no one with this nonsense. How many people come in the door and are just told to get on with it and sing.......tonnes of them !!!!! Lo and behold... the minute someone with a saga walks in...... well.... suddenly either Cheryl or Simon will say "so tell us about you" in other words cue the violins..... here we go !!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... off loaded all that... now I feel better.

Personality and image are important as well, I'd say.
The sob stories are for TV purposes at the auditions, many of them will disappear at boot camp without a mention (like the army guy last year). Only the sob stories with a bit of talent or entertainment value will make the live shows. It counts for less as the show goes on. |

i generally hate anyone who has a sob story forced on us, no matter how talented they are.
I don't agree that the voice is eveything though, I'd take someone a little different every time. Its a shame that the bootcamp doesn't seem to have a band to play with this year, i like to see how people can do things musically, not just vocally, its important for them in the long term if they want to succeed outside of the show. |

I know what you mean but have to disagree about voice being only thing that matters.
For example if britney spears was a no-one and came onto that stage doing Toxic or gimme more with all the dancing and wat not I think people would be blown away. That's what the x factor is. robbie Williams has it, the spice girls had it etccc. |

I hope that they are going to disappear at boot camp. Last year they didn't, on the contrary they were pushed to the extreme (Niki- Beverley and her mother's grave
) But I think that in general they have been more subdued this year, so there is hope. They'll want to get some kind of back story going for the contestants on the live shows, though. |

Yeah i agree, but you neva get dancers who can sing auditioning which is a shame, and they would have to sing live, britney mimes or ad libs. So someone who can do both well, i.e lady gaga would work well. |

Voice is the most important thing, but once we're down to the real contenders, we start looking at other factors - personality is important to me. I prefer Jordin Sparks to Leona Lewis because, although Leona seems like a very nice person, so does Jordin, who to me gives infinitely better interviews and has more character. Neither of them are particularly great dancers/performers despite being great singers. This doesn't bother me too much as I'm partially blind, and my performance skills are twice as bad as theirs put together, but it does matter top those who enjoy a visual perofmance to compliment a vocal performance.
Image does seem to matter in the industry, although it doesn't to me personally - if anything, I'd favour someone with a natural, maybe not conventionally stunning look about them - those types have their chance on Top Model, but if they can sing, I'll listen ![]() As a past auditionee with a sob story I reckon was so big they couldn't risk showing it, I'm not a fan of watching the sob stories. I empathise with the contestants who've been through tragedies, or admire those who've overcome hurdles in their lives, but I'd rather learn more relevant things about them and "get to know them" by watching them in their element, not being interrogated about tragedies they'd rather keep preivate. Everyone has a potential sob story, so it's not the contestants who have sob stories who should be shunned, but the exploitation of those stories. People like Niki deserve to go through based on talent, and people like Lisa who lost weight are borderline (as opposed to appalling) and end up being put through to make up the numbers at boot camp. I don't think the producers/judges want to see 250 equally amazing acts at boot camp as it would make their job harder, potentially provide less entertainment value and the public would question their final decisions twice as much - the powers that be probably have a clear winner in mind, and know who could get past them and how they can prevent it from happening, then throw in a few fillers. They can't plan for 249 acts getting past their chosen one though. Simon Cowell would never agree to work so hard ![]() xxxx |
