I just got a panasonic th42pz80b plasma and a sony dav-dz260 surround sound. I cannot get the surround sound to work with the tv programs. It works fine as a dvd through hdmi. I have attached a phono lead to the red phono socket on the back of the sony unit and connected it to the red output phono on the back of the tv. I have switched the DVD to "TV" mode but can't get any sound. The only other socket on the back of the surround is an optical socket but don't know how this connects and if it did would it make a difference. There doesnt seem to be an optical socket on the back of the tv. Any help gratefully appreciated.

Are you sure you have it connected to the audio output on the TV and not the audio input that is next to it?
The audio in is for a PC or Component input.

Bad news. The reason you can't get it to work is because the socket on the back of the Sony is a SPDIF Digital Audio input (look closer and it should be orange not red ). The sockets on the back of the Panasonic are Stereo analogue line outputs. Bit like two people trying to communicate when one speaks only English and the other only Chinese. Zero comprehension on either side.

And it gets worse. The Sony has no Analogue audio inputs and the Panasonic has no digital audio outputs. So they will forever be unable to talk to each other.
