Apples
TheHistoryGirl

A friend of mine has just given me about 5 kilos of apples. I'm planning on making apple sauce and apple jelly this weekend. Any other suggestions? It is only me and my husband, so things that are preserved/freezable would be really useful.

Thanks.

Thanks for the links, Moya. I think apples on toast may become my breakfast of choice for the next week or so. And cider is an excellent idea, but don't you need particular types of apples? I've never tried making it before, hence my ignorance.

You won't get a lot of cider out of 5 kilos of apples.
But yep, you can use any sort of apples to make cider. Whether you'll like the taste of the particular cider you actually get is a different story!

I'd stick with the muffins if I was you

I think you're right Moya. I hope they freeze well.

If you're making Apple Sauce, perk it up a little with a liberal shot of Calvados!!

The alcohol also helps to preserve it as well.

Baked Apple is easy

1 cooking apple per person
Demerara sugar
Sultanas, raisins or mixed dried fruit
Cinnamon or mixed spice

Scoop out the core from the top of the apple, leaving a well. Do not cut all the way through.
Score the skin around the centre of the apple, to stop the skin bursting.

Stuff each apple with 1 teaspoon of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of dried fruit.
Now, they may resist but force it in!
Put in a shallow baking dish and sprinkle with cinnamon or mixed spice.

Bake at 175 C/350 F/Gas 4 for 15-30 minutes, until sugar begins to caramelize and apples are soft.

Nice with ice cream.

When's lunch?
I'm starving now!

Ooh, thanks for the tip! I think I even have some Calvados at the back of the booze cupboard, although I have no idea how it got there.
