I have noticed on 14:9 broadcasts on my TV that the blacks are not even. There is more of a black line at the bottom of the screen than the top.
Is their anyway to shift the screen downwards at all as this can be annoying?

My TV is a Samsung LE40A457 as stated here http://www.inakup.sk/obr/samsung/sam...7-c1dxxh-1.jpg

Is there a engineers menu or something to adjust it or is it a return-it-to-the-shop job?

Thanks
FV

It's a put up with it job in all probablity. You don't get that kind of adjustment with consumer TVs normally, you can see it might result in a lot of spurious waranty claims.

I would expect the bars to be to the left and right on a 14x9 broadcast.

What channel/s are you viewing when you get this affect?

Virgin1 and Dave at times.]
Also I get black bars at the side when a programme is broadcast in 4:3

Bars to the side of 14x9 and 4x3 are normal if the broadcaster is transmitting the programme correctly.

You will also get bars top and bottom when the broadcaster broadcasts in the letterbox format.

If the bars are uneven then that will most likely be down to the displays configuration within the main set up (service menu).

Some sets do offer the facility to shift the image vertically and horizontally where you can centre the image, this does vary from set to set and manufacturer to manufacturer.

If you don't have this option you could have a word with the company that you bought it from or try and reset it via the service menu if you can find a way to access it and you what you are doing.

If it's showing bars top and bottom on 14x9 and 4x3 programmes then I'd have to say it's a fault and I would be inclined to have it looked at or take it back.

I'm sure he means the bars top and bottom that you get when viewing 14:9 in a 4:3 window. Obviously those bars will disappear when setting the TV aspect ration to 14:9 but the picture will still be off centre.

How about uktv History? You will notice for non-widescreen programmes that the 't' of uktv cuts into the black line at the top of the screen. They are broadcasting a 14:9 picture in a 4:3 frame for programmes but switch to widescreen for the adverts.

Sky News Sports broadcast in 4:3 but for adverts they change to 14:9 in a 4:3 frame.

First of all check your TV picture size setting is set to Auto-wide under Menu, Picture (it does sounds as if your TV is already set to this)?

This being ok, then check a normal 4:3 channel. If you are not getting any black lines at the top or bottom then there isn't a problem with your TV. You will though have black lines either side (pillar box) of a 4:3 picture as the Samsung panel is widescreen.

If the problem is only with the Virgin Media/ UKTV channels then it is a 'feature' of how the channels are being broadcast. You can get round it by setting the picture to Zoom but this will effect all channels so you may wish to use it temporarily when watching a particular channel using the P.Size button on the remote.

If it effects all 4:3 channels then there may indeed be an adjustment required to your TV. I wouldn't advise anyone to go into the engineering menu unless they know what they are doing.

If you have a Sky box try turning off scart control.
If you don't have Sky then see if any other devices have scart control and turn it off.

I know it's an odd fix but it worked for me.
