Tiscali pvr box any news.

I'm one of the Tiscali TV customers with said box which is brilliant apart from the fact, as most users complain, it sounds like a vacuum cleaner on steroids.

I was wondering is anything is being done to tackle this problem and if Tiscali are planning on replacing this immobile hovercraft with a new model any time in the near future?

Shame such a good and versatile piece of kit has to have a formula one wind tunnel fan inside it, which never seems to know when to turn off.

Couldn't work out why mine was quiet and others noisy until I left mine on for a few days and then it did get very noisy, I would say turn the box off when you're not using it and give it a chance to cool and quieten down, but then you might forget about some scheduled recordings and lose them, luckily I don't record too much and can turn it off.

As you say turning the box off rather defeats the purpose, and then you have work through all your settings again, and check it hasn't missed loading some channels so your recordings don't fail. Especially if you have it set for recording three channels at the same time as it can do.

At the end of the day the MK2 Spitfire propeller needs dealing with inside the box, to get over this fundamental design issue.

I was just hoping for some news.

I suppose it depends what you term "not very"

I know that if the tv is not on or there is no other background noise like the radio, them everyone who visits asks what is making the din.

Even when it's not doing anything in particular it can take ages to wind down a small amount, if at all.

If you turn it off for a while then back on it makes a lot less sound, but as soon as it gets any significant use the levels just get higher and higher, it's like it doesn't actually seem to be achieving anything with the fan,so steps up another gear, and is very reluctant to go the other way.

I know people have sent their boxes back because of this, so it's not a one off.

My Tisc+ box's noise is tolerable, although I was dismayed at first because my other PVRs are silent. I gather from this forum's posts that the Tisc+ boxes vary in noisiness, and I wonder if the only solution for the 'bad' ones is to replace the fan, as has been carried out by Humax owners (see their forum).

Our problem is that the box is not ours to do with as we wish, including invalidating the warranty.

I'm sat 3 feet away and I can't hear it at all. You could call CS and ask if you can have a quieter model.

Are you serious? Is it the black pvr box or the bog standard one without the recording facility?

I've been monitoring mine over the last few weeks and soon as the room ambient temperature gets anywhere near 20 C away it goes, and yes it is well ventilated.

I can hear it in other rooms let alone 3 ft away.

Well, my PVR model is the latest one, specifically designed to be quieter. Obviously it is, my room temp is above 20C

Call CS and complain.

Is there a model number?

If you can hear yours in from other rooms then it may be faulty. Call CS and they will book an engineer for you

MK_Brett - It’s good to see you on this forum again! Please confirm that there is a more than one T+ model available. FYI – I returned my T+ a few weeks ago because it was so noisy. I could hear it in the hallway between my living room and kitchen. My T+ was approx. 14 feet away from my living room’s doorway. In the hallway I could clearly hear both my T+ and my fridge! The Tiscali engineer that came to collect my T+ did not seem to think it was no noisier than any other. Technical support also agreed that the T+ was noisy. They told me a quieter T+ was being developed, but they could not give me any idea on when it would be available.

Peter We – Your T+ is my idea of a, ‘dream machine’. Please let us know if you obtained it through regular channels – You paid £50 and then a Tiscali engineer came and installed it for you, or if you obtained it via some other means (eg. from a STB trial).

Thanks Digi, for reassuring me I'm not going nuts or senile, Model numbers would be good so we know we are all on the same page.
Would a Mod: STHd4L make any sense, made in China?

I was given this model because it was supposed to be a quieter version of the box.

Model number is STH4DL 1E63VDN
PR: 08/07

The thing though, my room is very cool. My PS3 is also very quiet, unlike some who complain about its noise, both are noisier with an increase in ambient temperature. My T+ box is also stood on its edge which produces less vibration on the table top.

Sorry, I shouldn't have posted, but I get carried away
There is no Mk1 or Mk2 T+. There are only firmware updates and mfr updates. There is no point in serial number checking as a means to getting a newer T+ as we refurbish them when they come back and you could (in theory) end up with a noisier T+

A few nights ago I discovered a mouse in my bedroom When I switch the TV off to listen for rustles and/or the pitter-patter of tiny feet, it becomes apparent that the noise from my Tiscali+ box would drown them out Tonight I shall have to choose a time when it's not recording (difficult, at night) and switch it off at the back.

I have not done this yet but, I have 2 digital timers that plug in the wall, each has a battery back up. They can be programmed to come on and off with up to 10 separate on off programmes and each of these can be single or various patterns of days of the week.
So If you regularly use the box to record a program at 3 am, you can set the timer too, give it a bit of boot time. Also the timers have a manual override on them so you can just switch it on and off.

I use one of my timers and an old dim CFL as a SAD lamp, it only comes on during the week.

There is the extra faff of setting the timers, which is not too tricky, but it also saves power too.
