"Dessert"? It's "afters" or "pudding" in polite society.

At home usually just one course (main) but if out then I may have a starter and a main. Or I may have a main and a desert...

Changing the subject slightly, I know the convention is in the order mentioned -- starter, main course, pud.

But, why is this?

I remember being told as a kid that you'll feel sick if you eat pudding before dinner. This of course is nonsense, isn't it?

I would definitely feel sick if I had something sweet before my main meal. I think most other people would too.

It's weird, if I get crisps and chocolate, I have to eat the crisps, then the choc.
Spose you eat the pudding after dinner so you are left with the lovely sweet taste and memory

Dinner for me, don't really do dessert, but I would call it dessert or afters (or pudding!)

One thing I always wondered re the "dinner vs tea" debate.

Those who call dinner (evening meal) Tea, when you go out for a meal in the evening, do you say I'm going out to dinner like I do, or do you say "I'm going out for my tea"?

Just wondering really.

Thats a good point, I call my evening meal tea but if I was going out it would be for dinner!

Actually I tend to say Breakfast, Lunch, Tea. However if either Lunch or Tea was a big meal, I'd change it to Dinner. (And sorry for all those caps)
