Strictly Come Dancing DVD

Why is there not one? I thought there would be one of all the series like they do with Dancing on Ice, but there is not a single one (except for the live tour and some of the professionals teaching the dances). They dont even repeat it again on television (iPlayer does not count). I was hoping to ask one this year as a birthday present..

That's the live tour, I don't think that what scorpio (who said that there is not a single one (except for the live tour and some of the professionals teaching the dances)) is looking for.

That DVD has been cancelled.

I suspect the reason there isn't a DVD is because of music clearance issues. If you watch the DOI DVDs, they get round this by playing clips rather than full length routines, and substituting music. I don't think it would work for Strictly- to be honest, I don't think it works particularly well for DOI.

The best way to get it on DVD is to record it yourself. Failing that, make some friends on DS then ask nicely for copies

Oh I wonder why it's being advertised? When you say its been cancelled, you mean it wasn't produced at all?

Another way of creating your own dvd would be to download clips from You Tube - if you know how to, that is! Regrettably I don't (any tips gratefully appreciated!!!!!)

I don't think they'd be good enough quality if you downloaded from youtube. It's fairly easy to do though- I have this add-on for firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
and I use it to download any clips I like, just in case they're deleted.

That's right- it was advertised on Amazon and then they emailed everyone who had pre-ordered it to say it had been withdrawn.

Its always to do with music clearances. When choosing songs now they should make that part of the deal that they can release a DVD.

Don't they make enough money as it is?

Thank you for that, Katie. I'll give it a try - poor quality of something you really like is better than no quality at all.

thanks again

Someone recently sent me a DVD made from WMV clips, and it was excellent quality, so you could always try asking for people to upload things for you.

I don't think it's as easy as that. Some artists charge obscene amounts of money for their music to be used. I was listening to the commentary on a dvd for a tv show that relied heavily on music and a certain artist wanted too much for it that they had to use different music on the dvd.
Maybe they can't find a distributor who's willing to negotiate with every single artist over the fee. There's lots of shows that won't go on dvd just because of the fees involved in paying the artists.

From what we've heard, it appears to have been the very last show of the tour, which was filmed in Birmingham.

It's pretty certain it was a Birmingham date as that is mentioned in the preview clip for the DVD (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Strictly-Com...4222440&sr=1-4). We don't know for certain which show it was, but there were more cameras filming for the last two shows than for the the rest so it's almost certainly one of those two.

Birmingham, I think.

When a song's in the public domain you can hum along to it as much as you like, but you can't make money out of it. That right belongs to the person who wrote it. When you consider the number of singers and bands who do play other artists' songs live, the loss of copyright fees must be enormous. I can understand artists wanting to charge exorbitant fees, or percentages of DVD sales. Think how much money the beeb is likely to make from DVD sales, and how the people who wrote the songs make their money.

I understand the need for artisits to charge - the case I was talking about was an unknown band who had their music used in the tv show I was watching and when it came to them releasing it on dvd - they pretty much took the pee out of them and so decided not to use them.

I think the beeb have to be absolutely sure they'll make money out of it and I don't blame them for not wanting to put it out on dvd. Look how long it's taking them to put the wonder years out. And I'll never see one of my fave shows, Daria, on dvd because there's no one willing to front the cost of the music rights even though it's like the 3rd most (well, last I checked) requested tv show people want released on dvd. The best we can do is keep petitioning the bbc till they are happy with the number of people willing to buy it.
