The only reason you would want to upscale is if you had an HDTV, which would upscale it anyway. The TV would probably do a better job too! So could anybody tell me the point in upscaling DVD Players? Wouldn't it be better to just use an ordinary DVD player and let the TV do the upscaling?

Yes.

The only way you're likely to get much in the way of improvement is:

1. You have a TV with a cheap & nasty upscaler.
2. You spend serious money (probably around £150 minimum) on a DVD player with top drawer upscaling capabilities.

The point of upscaling DVD players is it adds a feature to the ticklist and is a marketing scam. So many people I know have bought a upscaling DVD player because they got a HDTV and thought they needed the player to give them 'HD'. There all amazed when I explain to them that the tv will scale any input to it that doesn't match its resolution exactly, which may actually involve downscaling the the 1080 output they get from their DVD player.

The problem is that HDTV are not marketed as upscaling tv's.
