Does anyone miss the pop idol format?
I think it would be a whole lot better to go back to the old pop idol format.
Down to the last 50 the acts perform 10 every week and the public pick the top 2 by telephone vote. Much better as we get to see the performers after they have had a week spent with everything you would get prior to the live stages of x-factor. So instead of 4 judges making questionable decisions we would actually know who was good and have a proper top 10 voted for by us the public instead of having ones that got away which if we look at Alexandra this year does happen also getting rid of those no hopers that were chosen by idiots and get eliminated straight away. Lets face it at the end of the day the judges know nothing we the audience are the only judges they should have. |

Yes yes yes! I was thinking about this today. What I think would be good is the final 6 in each category get there own show where they have one chance to sing and we pick the 3 to go through to the final 12.

Honestly, I thought the last 50 business was hideous. I like the X-Factor and the way they run it now, even with the changes.

yeah, i think the pop idol format would work better
it's because of that that we got will young. i doubt simon would have put him through, as if i remember rightly, he didnt like him all that much i know we also got michelle mcmanus, but i think that was more of a joke than anything else |

Another difference was that Pop Idol focused on finding a solo artist whereas at least in X Factor groups are given a chance.
Actually it would be good if they could resurrect Popstars: the Rivals as girlbands and boybands never really go out of fashion for long. |

I love the X-Factor so much better than the Idol format. I like the idea of mentoring, I like the fact that you have groups, I like the fact that there's a category for over 25s (in American Idol, for example, there's a relatively low age limit). I especially like the idea of the judges choosing the final team because I trust their judgment more than I trust the audience's. If this competition is aimed to find people who can succeed in the business, I want to have people from the industry heavily involved in it. I think that voting on the final 12 is participatory enough.
However, I do live in the US, which means I'm slightly ODed on the Idol format. |

Simon Fuller owns the rights to the Pop Idol format - Simon Cowell had to settle a law suit with him over XF so it will never return to that similar format.

Have to admit I never saw the British Pop Idol, only ever seen parts of the American version and find it knee-achingly dull. 16 or so bog-standard singers one after the other - no thanks! I got bored during the boot-camp episodes.
I like the variety of X-factor. |

I can never bear the semi finals on American Idol. And it takes away from the actual live final shows as well. XF offers a bit more variety with different stages. When XF gets to the live shows, there are usually a few weeks to chop off the rubbish ones. But on Idol it takes even longer and there are just too many random contestants showing up that you know won't get anywhere. The whole thing drags on forever.
There won't be another PI in the UK. It had been rumoured, but Simon won't do it, Ant and Dec won't do it and Pete won't do it and so neither will Neil Fox. Which leaves us with Nicki Chapman... Plus Talkback Thames produce both shows and I doubt they would want to threaten XF, especially as Fuller sued them as well. It's more likely that with the two Simon's supposedly best of friends again, and Cowell taking a greater role on AI, that Idol will move more towards X Factor. |

The second series of Pop Idol was awful, that killed the format in the UK.

I do! The Pop Idol format was really good but I've never been able to get into X Factor. There's too much involvement by the judges- the show seems to be more about them and their egos than the acts.
