I took my dog to the Vet today
I have a 19 year old dog that has had a growth on her face just below her cheek. In the last week it started to grow to about half the size of a ping pong all, so I was going to take her to the Vet over the weekend.
But today when I got home from work it had burst open and started bleeding. Anyway, I took her to the Vet and he did bugger all apart from give her some antibiotics and say come back in a week. He didn't even give any hint to what it might be. Is he just trying to drag it out for more money (burring in mind how old she is) or has she got a chance? She seems happier tonight than she's been for a while. |

There isn't much you can do to be honest, they usually can't operate and antibiotics are really worth a go. All the best for your dog

He said they might need to operate but it's risky with her being so old.
If the antibiotics don't work it's either put her to sleep or give it a go with a opp. So might as well go with the opp if there is even a little chance. I honestly thought I wasn't going to bring her back home today. |

this is such a hard decision to make when your pet is old and has something the matter. Please be wary of the vet advising operations and prescribing drugs when a pet is so old. Now, dont get me wrong, I'm not saying this vet is trying to get more money from you however, I always remember our first springer spaniel was 16 when she began to have something wrong with her - she was walking with her head on one side and was losing her balance a little - we took her to the vets and he prescribed some antibiotics because he said she had an ear infection.
He gave her a 4 day course and said to bring her back if she hadnt improved after taking them - she didnt get any better. When we took her back the vet said she had had a massive stroke several days before and the only option now was to put her to sleep. Therefore, we paid for a 1st consultation and tablets and then another consultation and the jab to put her to sleep. Again, dont get me wrong, you (as did we) no doubt want the best for your dog and hope that they will pull though so will pay anything but just be aware that some, and not all, vets are quite happy to keep taking the money from people when their pet doesnt have a great chance of recovery. Hope you make a decision soon on whats best and hope your dog is feeling a bit better now.

All he said is it could be a tumour, but that could be just about anything. But he didn't seem very confident it would heel on it's own.
Its not very pretty at the moment. |

Its not very pretty at the moment. Poor dog. It does sound like an abcess though - my old cat used to get them quite often. I used to have to clean his 'wound' (yuk) with cotton wool and warm water and they healed pretty well, with the antibiotics. I hope he's better soon. |

I hope your dog is feeling better. All you can do is go by how they are enjoying life and it still seems that your dog is happy at the moment.
My puppy nearly drowned on Monday and I still feel really upset over it.She is well now but you do all you can for your pets as they give so much love. |
