Having Trouble With New Dog
And don't have a clue what to do, never had one of my own before.
He won't go into his bed to sleep, has been shitting on the living room floor and is continually humping pillows/cushions. Hes 20 months. I'm in myself all week and hes driving me up the wall

How long have you have the dog?
What breed? Is he neutered? Don't despair, a bit of training (you and dog) and your problems can probably be sorted ![]() The toileting is probably easiest. Go back to puppy toilet training 101. Out first thing in the morning. Out after every nap time. Out after every meal. At 20 months, out every couple of hours (he should be able to hold that long) Praise like a lunatic when he toilets where you want (outside) 'ignore' (ie, do not scold or punish) when he toilets inside. He won't understand and may become afraid to toilet in front of you. The humping may improve if you neuter him (if not already done) and unless he is a giant breed, 20 months is old enough. Otherwise, let him have a toy he can hump, but remove him from everything else. Especially visitors legs. To get him to go to his bed, clicker training is probably your best bet. Plenty of info if you google, but basically get a clicker and a big pot of tasty, high value treats (bacon, sausage, cheese etc). First, get him to associate a click with a treat. Just click and drop a treat. Once he understands click means treat, click and treat whenever he is near his bed. Then when he is nearer, then when he is actually in his bed (bait and lure can help here - leave a tasty treat in his bed). Then introduce the verbal command 'bed' and a visual cue (point at the bed?). Remember, he'll only do what you teach him to do. And, it is easier to teach a dog to do something (poop in the garden) than to teach them to not do something (poop in the lounge). |

Send him to dog borstal. ( I love what they do with the dogs on that show) last night saw Mick(one of the trainers) dashing water in a dogs face until he behaved, the poor animal was so stupid for so long, he eventually managed to retain his recall and passed with merits.

My little dog used to hump everything. Get him castrated, that sorts that out. As for the messing on the floor you need to train him. There are signs when a dog needs the loo. They get restless, start sniffing around the floor. As soon as you spot the signs. Take him straight out to the garden. Then praise him up when he does his business and take him back in the house. He'll soon learn. Maybe get a more cosey bed for him and a blanket. Put it somewhere more cosey.
