Summed up my opinions - only one average episode (Secret of the Stars). The rest were next to perfect.

I don't like the series...

I didn't enjoy either of the two episodes I watched. I watched the first because I expected to like it and the second because I wanted to like it... There wasn't a third try.

It's just too child-oriented for me... even more so than Who is... and that's on the border. And then there's Torchwood which tries too hard to be adult.

But that's me...

see i love the show, but i really dislike SJ, she just irritates the hell out of me! I agree about Clyde, he's great! And I agree that Rani isn't as endearing as Maria, she just tries too hard and comes across as a bit of a know-it-all, it appears not much shocks her!

I think the reason you might find the series "child-orientated" may be because the series is for children and teenagers. (As is Doctor Who, of course, and as for Torchwood, I believe that it is aimed at adults/ PG-rated.)
I'm a teacher and I have heard the children in my classes talk about how they even prefer Sarah Jane Adventures to Doctor Who, (which they love) so I think the programme-makers must be getting something right.

Doctor Who is intended for the whole family to watch together.
SJA is specifically targetted at children, but has many adult fans because of the link to Classic Who.
Torchwood is aimed at adults, the PG version was just a watered down pre-watershed repeat for series 2. Series 1 didn't do this, doubt series 3 will either.
