When is it the right time.....

...to take your dog to the vet knowing that the chances are you will come back alone?

Sorry it's sad but we have a 14 year old cross terrier, she sleeps most of the time but when she is awake cries for food, totally deaf, cataracts in both eyes, full of lumps and bumps, BUT still likes a walk ( even though she comes home in 5mins) has a wet siny nose!

I know it's inevitable but when do you think is the time to face the truth that she may be suffering and go to the vet?

Really would appreciate your advice.

In all honesty I think the right time is when keeping them alive is causing more distress than it is happiness - to all involved.

I would recommend speaking to your vets, telling them the problems and seeing what they say? They are the one'e who know best hun.....

And even if it is worst case scenario at least you know that you have done all you can, given her a very happy life and are doing the sensible, rational thing by ending her suffering.

I think you need to think of how your dog must be feeling, go along to the vet, discuss your fears... they will know best.

I do know how you feel though

I agree with the other posters ... talk to your vet. Also, remember you know your dog better than anyone and only you can know what her quality is like, whether she is content and comfortable or suffering. It's never going to be an easy decision and remember there is no right or wrong here.
I think, as a fellow pet owner, we know deep down inside ...
But do have that talk with your vet. Don't feel forced into anything, take your time ..

Sorry to hear about your dog. When the vet told me I had to make a decision I was sobbing like a madwoman in the vets. My cousin gave me then best advice. She said "He has been a friend to you and now you have to be a friend to him"
It broke me I don't mind admitting.
Ask your vet because they won't do it if they don't need to.
Good luck. x

I think you know when it's time. If you dog is suffering or unable to cope then it's probably the right time.

It's the hardest decision you'll ever make.

Some years ago it was time for our 13 yo Alsation, I think he knew as well. The first time I had to carry him outside made our mind up.
The vet was brilliant, she'd known the dog for years.

A few days later we received a letter from the dog, via the vet, thanking us for being great parents etc. It still brings tears 20 years on.

My heart goes out to you OP. As others have said it is the hardest decision you will ever have to make.

Would your vet come to the house when it's time?..... Some do,and it may be more comforting and less stressful for you (and your dog) to be in familiar surroundings.
