Jamie Oliver`s Ministry of food

Anyone else watch the first episode? I could not believe how in Britain today this is how parents are feeding their kids.
What has happened to Jamie Oliver too? I have the dvds from 10 years ago when he was a fresh faced new kid on the block. Does he seem bloated to anyone else? Has he not been taking his own healthy food advice? tut tut

Erm I think he's just got older - like most of us

But yes, it's extremely worrying that so many parents these days haven't had a basic grounding in cooking/preparation of food, so are resorting to expensive and unhealthy alternatives

My g/f said he seemed a bit podgy too.

Good programme though, i look forward to the rest of it. And i cant believe she fed her kid kebabs and takeaways every night

He should have slapped that woman, she was bleating about not being able to afford a bus fare to go and buy food for her child then stuck a cigarette in her mouth!

I thought exactly the same, can't believe she said she'd had to pawn her jewellery to get some money and then lit up a cig. Talk about getting your priorities wrong

I've been trying to get my head around the issues in this programme

My first outlook was that it was an excellent idea but then as I watched I felt that you have an ultra rich Chef (who has worked hard for what he has obviously) who is entering the homes of people who struggle to manage their budget and are on benefits.

I feel that perhaps going from not being able to cook to cooking from scratch is a huge huge move - perhaps it should be taken on in stages by different chefs/cooks -

I personally love cooking from scratch, but also feel there is nothing wrong in using jarred sauces, or packet mixes, frozen chips, and frozen veg etc. We live busy lives and sometimes need to take shortcuts, which in my opinion still give you a tasty meal and obviously that it is ok to have take out once in a while, but not every night

These people need all round educating about budget and how to prioritise things, then maybe then they can see what they can cook on their minimal budget.

I just feel that I would have found it intimidating having someone tell me what to cook without first going shopping to see what I could actually buy on my budget - the girl had a trolley laden with fresh herbs, dried herbs can do the job too

Like someone else said the girl lit up crying she couldn't afford the bus fare to the shops - but was buying take out every night at probably £15????? she clearly has more issues in her life.

I thought he may have had more look to start them off on takeaway or fast foods.
Chicken kebabs with salad and pitta bread. Quite healthy and fun to make.
Burgers, not far away from meatballs.
Jacket spuds in the oven or using the microwave.

I know Mr Oliver is probably going to concentrate on Britsh & Italian cuisine because of his training, but surely oriental foods would be a great start for quickness and cheapness. Homemade chinese takeaway style dishes and pot noodles.
