I can't imagine you'd get much meat on a Goldfish

I wouldn't personally want to eat a goldfish

Go out and buy yourself a nice hearty peice of fish OP

The oversized blighters swimming aorund in my brother in law's garden pond look decidedly manky and i wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

Not the green ones, they are not ripe yet.

I believe the are a member of the carp family. Anyone eaten a carp?

Not me, but that's why they're here. The Romans brought them over for food, and monks bred them in the Middle Ages also for food.

Stillwater fish though I think have to be purged in clean water to make them taste better.

Goldfish are a little bit small, I'd rather have whitebait.

pan fried in butter over a gentle heat, little bit of garlic and shallots, deglaze with white wine, add some cream serve with creamy mash.

Correct, they are small carp, effectively. If you put them into a much bigger tank and fed them up a bit, they'd be as edible as trout.

Ate one for a bet many many years ago. Though that was raw (and hopefully stunned) and I have felt pretty guilty about it ever since.

Well no it wasn't actually a real fish - P. Ness was living up to their user name and being a bit of a d*** by making up a story about their dead fish
