RCE Playback on the Sony 725D?
Nikhil
15-06-2001
I was under the impression that the Sony S-725D player that i have won't playback RCE enhanced region 1 discs but i had a look at the Play247 faqs and it say it does.

Does anyone with the player or with any knowledge know either way? Since the RCE stuff my dvd purchasing has been reduced but if it doesn't affect my player i'll be really happy.

Thanks for your help.

If you don't get any replies why don't you try and rent one and see if it plays.

Your recommendation on Play247 was a good one. I have bought several dvds from them now and their service is excellent. I have not quite caught up with your 40+ dvds yet but I am working on it!

Sorry just reread your post and saw the R1 bit, I cannot delete this post because I will delete yours as well. Apologies.

i have a Sony 725 with an auto-switching only Tridek mod (bought about 15 months ago) and it has no problems playing back RCE discs (or any other for that matter)

like i said in the other thread - if you can manually change regions you're fine - the only situation in which you may not be able to play RCE discs is if you've got an auto-only mod (like i do) - in which case it generally depends on what type of mod you have/how old the mod is (if you've got a recent auto mod - since about January - it'll probably be able to get around the RCE system you should be fine, but most recent auto mods generally have a manual switch option as well)

best thing to do is to check your machine with an RCE disc (as mentioned) - to be honest you probably still won't be 100% certain until you check your machine with an RCE disc - a friend had the same machine with the same mod as me and told me it was ok but until i actually checked it for myself i wasn't convinced my machine was ok!

I just borrowed Superman (R1 - RCE) off a friend and it seems to work on my dvd player brilliantly. Fantastic!! I didn't know what brand mod was on mine, all i know is that it is an autoswitching one, my sony centre did it for me.(So i've been putting off buying dvd's for nothing I could've bought crouching tiger hidden dragon months ago!! (mind you, i got it a few quid cheaper now!!))

Wicket, my collection has been seriously boosted since earlier, but i still buy the majority of my dvds from play247. They're a brilliant supplier!! (and the fact that recorded delivery is free is a bonus!! - now i can buy RCE dvd's i think i'm going to be spending quite a bit over the summer!! (that's if i can afford it )

not all R1 DVDs are RCE encoded - it's only selected titles from Warner and Columbia (although mainly Columbia recently) - although some retailers put down 'this disc may have RCE encoding' on all Warner or Columbia

Crouching Tiger Region 3 (the one which was available in January) was not RCE as RCE is currently only employed on Region 1 titles - the R1 i think is RCE but only came out a couple of weeks ago (and the R2 disc is as good as the R1 - as i said in the other thread, Columbia Tristar seem to be making the effort to make their R2 discs as good as the R1 version meaning there is less reason to buy the R1 anyway

Yeah, i know it's only the columbia tristar and warner discs that are being region coded at the moment. I did originally want to get the region 3 Crouching tiger hidden dragon dvd but i was too late as the only ones available were the ones without the english dubbing. I was going to buy it on Region one when it came out about 2 months ago but that was RCE encoded so i wasn't sure if it would play on my system. My region 2 copy of the dvd arrived today, i haven't seen it yet but the features look good.

I do agree, columbia tristar seem to always have tried their best when producing dvds for europe. Warner and Pathe still seem to have a lot of work to do (although some of warners titles have been impressive.)
