End of season green tomatos?
whoever,hey
04-10-2008
So then the last month of the tomato season, and my plants are starting to go black from frost and what unpicked fruit hasn't split still isn't ripening. Massive tomatoes but still green.

So i've just picked the lot, before the frosts come. Now i've got bags of the stuff. I know Jamie oliver cooked with his green fruit, but cant remember what he did with them.

Any ideas plz?

ps. been our first season growning tomatos and been soooooo chuffed, had more than we could possibly imagine from it

Frost?

I know it's cold but bloomin' 'eck!

I've just picked the last of my red toms today. I'm gonna throw the green ones away as they are awful.

why have you thrown your green tomatoes instead of them ripening if they could still stay on the plant?

I've just picked ours - dozens and there was no way they were going to ripen. I'm seeing what happens to the largest ones which are now in a paper bag with a couple of bananas. The rest are probably going into green tomato chutney, unless I can think of anything else.

I'm glad you produced at least green tomatoes. I would really suggest Fried Green Tomatoes..absolutely lovely!

Sheesh, my tomatoes started off so good. I went on holiday for 2 weeks in September, came back and the plants were all were pretty dead. There are like golf ball green ones but no chance now. I don't think I could even do the fried green tomatoes. I have tried for 10 years to grow tomatoes here and never once have I gotten even one!.

I did what everyone suggested and then even got the bags and plant them in it. It didn't work.

I think I need a greenhouse. It's on my Christmas list now, but it is out of season....lol typical me.

Just looked on Google for 'recipes for green tomatoes' and there are lots of ideas including something called 'chow chow', fried green tomatoes and green tomato soup!

Worth a little look instead of making loads of chutney!

Green tomatoes will ripen if you wrap them individually in newspaper and store them somewhere at an even temperature (cool rather than hot, but not in the fridge). A drawer is fine.

Unwrap them every now and then and use the red ones--just re-wrap the green ones.
